Creating an outdoor rink on Lake SimcoeIt was a cold Saturday morning (well below zero on the Fahrenheit scale, -24 Celsius), but tons of people were outdoors enjoying the rare (so it seems lately) winter sun. This dad, son and golden retriever were clearing a place on the edge of the lake to skate, almost like in the olden days...except the dad had a snow blower.
Got to love this age. Doesn't the boy look happy shoveling snow?

Interesting and beautiful. Funny, I had this picture of the ice forming a natural rink never thinking it needed to be prepared. Ha ha. Great pictures.

How cool. (Honestly, no pun intended!) I thought snow blowers were like leaf blowers until I met my husband from North Dakota. I had no idea they were such a powerful machine.

I did a collage today for my sister's haiku post today. It is a collection of shots from our childhood. The collage consists of photos from just 2 days in the late 60's. One day was Easter and the other was just an ordinary winter's day of skating on the rink my Dad had made for us to skate on. It was huge! Our lawn cleared away when the sun shone, but like there I saw people at the lake clearing it so they could skate...just need the time to go there and take some shots!

I suppose if it had occurred to me to think o fit, I might have realized that you'd have to shovel the snow off the ice. But considering that what usually passes for snow here is ice, it didn't occur to me.
And yes, I was actually born in Raleigh and other than a few brief periods when I moved away, I've lived here all my life. So I remember more than most about the area, though it's grown so much so fast I'm not sure it'd be fair to say I know more than anybody else.
My favorite part of this? The look on the dog's face. He's all business looking out for his humans isn't he?
Too bad the enthusiasm for manual labor is something the kid'll grow out of in a few years ;)

I would say that boy looks about 7 years old, a rather perfect age in my opinion. Work is fun, isn't it? Great winter pictures.
A big cold job for a young lad and his Dad, but I am sure they will clear a nice patch together. The fun will be all the sweeter for having done the work.

Ah, yes - Once upon a time, I asked to wash the dishes. I hope this young man keeps his love of the outdoors, even if shoveling snow loses its appeal.
I am happy to visit snow covered peaks in the summer! Looks like good exercise though! :)

Lovely photo af snow removal being so much fun, the anticipation of skating on your cleared snow ice rink.
Growing up I went skating at a pond with my dad and little brother and I remember he would bring a shovel and a broom with him to clear away an area that we could have for our family. Brings back some wonderful memories of my dad being a great skater, of course he taught my brother to play ice hockey. I just did the figure skating wanting to be like Dorothy Hamill.
Oh that brings back memories of shovelling a pond in Vermont so that we could skate on it. It was wonderful fun and good exercise too.
Thanks to share that typical "hobby" of your world ! I wouln't have imagined one could do such hard task just for to skate !
I wonder how much the ice is thick underneath. That's a sort of question people who aren't used to cold weather ask !

The ice is VERY thick. Cars and trucks are driving on it this time of year.
This is winter to me. You seem to much more snow in Canada than I have in Sweden, but we still have the frozen lakes.

My kids love shovelling things too! Only they shovel beach sand. LOL. It sure seems like such a lot of work.
