You're right - something about the twisted trunk makes it look like it's winding up for a throw.

Dead trees are a bit special.
Bet the critters love that old tree trunk... We have one in the empty lot next door and there are holes --and woodpecker holes all through that old tree. It's no telling what lives in there now!!!
