Habitat tree, Windy Ridge Conservation Area
I bet more than a few of you are asking what's a "habitat tree" so I'm going to tell you. It's a natural environment where another plant or animal lives. (Easy peasy, eh?)
In this tree's case, it is also a snag - a dead, standing tree. And at the bottom there's a hollow where some animal, likely a porcupine, lives or has lived. How did I know a porcupine lives/lived there? Truth time! There's a sign at the bottom of the tree that says porcupine scat was found there.

A sign? I'm so disappointed! I thought you would have at least stuck your hand in the hollow! Sheesh!
I have not heard the word "snag" used to refer to a dead, standing tree. Now I know why people used to refer to me as a snag.

Oh, so nice and lovely! This is absolutely good for the nature.. to let the tree stay, and shelter for a porcupine.. maybe some time ago then.. or the porcupine maybe have found a new home.. ?

Great shot and post. It's so important for trees (even "dead" ones)to be left in the woods as they provide a habitat for so many different living organisms.

Oh snags are lovely and I wish people would leave them alone..I had to laugh at the comment where someone asked you if you stuck your hand in there..LOL.....

What a wonderful old tree I bet the porcupine isn't the only one that uses it as a home!
