Eastern Meadowlark/World Birds

 Eastern Meadowlark

I was just saying a few weeks ago that I had never seen an Eastern Meadowlark...and NOW I have seen three - this one just a few kilometres from home.

This one was very quiet, as was the first one I saw less than a month ago. I mention this because I live in an area where the Western Meadowlark's range overlaps with the Eastern. The two species are difficult to tell apart and their songs are one of the major ways to be sure of which is which.

Napkin, please

Notice the dirty beak. I suspect he had recently extracted worms or grubs from the muddy soil below. It was the evening of a rainy day.

I am linking to World Bird Wednesday.

I had never noticed meadowlarks until a bitter winter a couple years ago when they showed up at our feeders. I love how they look.

Pretty little bird. :)

Now I know why they say “happy as a lark”. There is something optimistic about its sunshine yellow feathers!

I love your blog. I always learn something new and your pictures are wonderful. I saw my first Meadowlark this year and posted it weeks back on WBW. They are all around, I hear them, but they are hard to spot. Thanks for another visit with nature ...

Great photos of him. We see (and hear) the western all the time, but I've never seen an eastern.

You are getting very good at these bird pictures! I think we have meadowlarks by the bushel here in Stone Creek but they don't have that bright yellow chest...sure do make a lot of noise, though!

Great captures. I want to photograph one so bad and the ones at the strip pits are so wild.

Down home, they did not seem to mind...would sit on the telephone wire with me right below them.
