Black-crowned night-heron #1
This medium-sized, stocky heron is the most widespread heron in the world but most of us rarely see any because they are most active from dusk through dawn. Their range includes five continents, excluding Australia and Antarctica.
Black-crowned night-heron #2
Like their cousin the great blue heron, they forage in shallow waters, feeding on crustaceans, fish, amphibians, insects. and small rodents.
I am linking to World Bird Wednesday.

This is a rare catch Camera Girl. I used to see them in Frenchman's Bay but they have been absent the last few years.
That is cool, I have never seen one before...This is why I love blogging.
Herons have such unusual eyes.
I love Night Herons ... one of my favorites and I find them, most often in the Japanese Garden here ... so happy when I do. Love these shots!
Love his bright beautiful eye!
i have only seen one of these and he was in the shade and i got no photo. i love that first shot, the shadows on the heron, just beautiful

you got some GREAT photos!
Great photos! I've never seen one of these. Thanks for the info on them.
We were thrilled to see the night heron last year. I'm always on the lookout but haven't spotted one this year. Great photos.
If you have time, there is a give away on my blog.
One of my favorite birds to see out in the wild. They like to hide in the reeds but Herons make a greally great group of birds that are quite diverse in appearance. Beautiful pics up close! Love the red eyes!
I've never seen one of these either - have seen the yellow one in Florida but not this guy!
These are superb, EG! Wow! You maybe ought to become a pro bird photographer. Seriously!
Magnificent shots. I love the vivid eyes!
I love the shadow on heron number one, A classic!
Is it just me or is there something just the tiniest bit spooky looking about this bird? Beautiful but spooky.

Awesome, I have never seen one before. Thanks for sharing
Great photos - and yes! I found it in my Australian bird book. However, I have yet to see one!
I remember the 1st time I saw one of these fantastic birds, I dropped my jaw wide open...the eyes...how they followed every move I made setting up my camera.
Great images.
MERLIN FALCON
great closeups of the night-heron; interesting 'red' eyes
He is quite the handsome fellow, isn't he?

What gorgeous shots! I love the red eyes!
I just love the Night herons! They are cool birds. Great shots.
They are a gorgeous bird, and as you say, hard to capture with a camera. Well done!
An unusual sighting of a beautiful bird...you are so adept at ts kind of photography.
These are more incredible captures, beautiful! (I've mainly glimpsed a giant blue heron around here, never this fellow...so cool!)
One of my most favorite birds, and you've captured such glorious shots!!!
Awesome captures! I saw one, for a while, walking at 7 AM, but not in the last couple of years...
gorgeous portraits!
What a striking bird! Great shots!
He's a stout little thing.
Nice sots, EG. It is hard to think of this bird as common. I am not sure that I have ever seen one, unlike their cousins the blue herons, which are everywhere.
that's a great shot! such an interesting looking bird.
Those are some crazy eyes! Love them!
Beautiful, love those eyes.
Well captured!!!We had spotted them some years back but after the people filled the water part to build concrete stuff all the birds are gone...I feel so sad whenever I visit that place. Thanks for sharing.I really enjoyed your post.Have a great day!

Terrific shots! Love the red eyes!
A truly beautiful heron! I have never seen one before! Not even in photos. Kind've reminds me of a green heron, which I have seen in Va.
Thanks for your well-wishes and prayers about my surgery!
A very interesting looking bird. It must have made your day to see this rare one.
