Mid July/Nature Notes

York Regional Forest last weekend

Butterfly sipping nectar from dogbane at the edge of the forest.  In fact, all these photos were taken at the edge of the forest while I waited for an indigo bunting to appear. (FYI: He did show up but at too far a distance to get a good photo.)

Moving clockwise: soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), bladder campion (Silene cucubalus), wild grass. speedwell (Veronica) and lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria).

Please note that I include the botanical names because common names vary so widely.

What pretty subtle markings on the butterfly! I see there are lots of nice things to be found at the edges of forests. :)

This is mid-July already? Do you know what that means - Christmas is coming soon! OMG! I think I'll skip it this year and celebrate only Hanukkah!

It's nice that you captured a bit of July in the forest before the snows come!

Oh that butterfly! I like that you include both names as I'm learning too :) (But please don't let it be mid-July already, eek).

Thank you for the flower photos identified with both names. But what is the name of that butterfly? It is not one I recognize. It is great to have a walk in the woods.

Really..I guess it is mid-july already and hot..hot..hot.. Love to know what the butterfly is but great to learn more about the plants. I want to identify as many as I can in my area....Michelle

It's amazing how much some of the botanical names change from one country to the other.....and let's not go into different languages!! Within the Spanish speaking world, each country has their own name for the same plant. It's a bit overwhelming at times.

Your pics are golden:)
