American Black duck
American black ducks live mostly in eastern North America, but they have been seen on the West Coast, in Europe and in Asia.
Taking a bath
They are mostly vegetarian but eat insects and small mollusks and fish during breeding season. In shallow water they are dabbling ducks but in deep water they have been known to dive as much as 12 feet for tasty nibbles.

LOVE the shot with his wings .... it looks like he's directing a choir :)
What a handsome and beautiful bird.
Isn't he the beautiful, colourful one! Wonderful shots!
I'm becoming very fond of ducks!
Very nice photos of the black duck. I'v sharing some swan photos this week.
Awesome photos, I really like the 'bath' one!!
Oh I am always so happy to see your bird shots but your teachings about what we are seeing make it perfect. Love those ducks.B
wow on the deeep diving
Such a sweet duck!
I see that tiny bit of color on the wing! :)
Urocze kaczki, a drugie zdjęcie jest wspaniałe. Pozdrawiam.
Adorable ducks, and the second photo is great. Yours.
That poor black duck is a little blue! Probably because he's not in Florida. Cute though and you shot him well.
Fantastic shots.. I love the action you captured, CC.
Florida Birder
The black duck looks very like a female mallard, that must be very confusing sometimes! (The two species hybridise too, so it must be confusing for them as well!)
Wow! Majestic ducks and amazing photography ~ (A Creative Harbor) ^_^
Beautiful shots. Love the bath!
very handsome shots!
I love a sweet faced duck.
Great pics, EG.
Like the post before too. MB
Another bird lesson for us, EG!
Oh, I don't think we've ever had these, what a sweet pretty duck - I love how you caught them & that pop of blue colour!
(I also love the idea of majestic buildings dedicated to a good education - if any pursuit deserves beautiful surroundings, it's that:)
That's one plump little duck.
Very nice shots.
You have wonderful pictures of this duck.
Great photos of the ducks.
This is a new duck for me as well. I don't think I have seen one yet....well I know I haven't but it would be another cool lifebird. Great pics:)
Beautiful shots of the Black Duck. I have never seen one closeup. They are usually far away.
I always think ducks look cold the way the squish up their bodies under them. Love the blue wing tips peaking out.
I love that little dash of foot you see in these shots. I always love to see their feet working in the water.
I saw my first Black Ducks in Wisconsin this summer. They are beautiful and your pictures capture that. I would never have guessed that they were divers ... they aren't built like most diving birds. A very interesting fact ... thanks. I love it when I learn something new. The trick is to remember it :)

Beautiful shots! The wing spread is always one of my favorites!
I would have called this a mallard, but what do I know?
Lovely shots of the ducks, love the shimmering blue in the wings.
Very beautiful bird and very nice photos! I hope duck hunting is forbidden in your country.
Splendid birds - for all that Mallard are common I still like them. The males are great when they are in full breeding plumage.
Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW - Stewart M - Melbourne
Black ducks and mallards are very similar, Jack. Even they think so and sometimes interbreed. The offspring are sterile, though.
Nice shots! They look like our mallards, but I've just read on Wikipedia about the difference. I do that often, when I'm not sure about all english/american names on birds.

Love ducks!!
We both did ducks this week -- they look a lot alike, although most thought mine were mallards. Your pics are much clearer..thanks!
These are beautiful shots!
Very nice images of American Black Duck and informative comments. Thank you for sharing!
She seems to be using a banana for a beak, especially on the first photo :-).
