Great Blue Heron scratching an itch
Last Wednesday, this young heron was fishing in a small local marsh. It didn't seem to mind that I was there with my camera as it was focused on catching some lunch. But then it appeared to be tired of waiting and took time to scratch an itch.
Soon it decided to change it's fishing spot. And there it discovered a small fish and swallowed it in one gulp.
Another small fish was downed quickly.
And still another small fish served as an appetizer.
Swallowing
Delish!
Catfish
And then it caught a really BIG fish! Doesn't the heron looked pleased with its catch?

He eats that catfish and he's going to be seriously overloaded for takeoff. :-)

Haha! I was thinking the same as Revrunner, there's no way that young Heron is taking off in the next hour or so ) super series of shots EG.
Wow! That guy's quite a fisherman. Love the soggy feathers.
woo hoo on that last fish, would love to see him swallow it.. i have seen them swallow big fish and also the pelicans. it is amazing how they do it. i like the 2nd and last shot best.. they are all beautiful but those touch me...
After that cat fish, it'll be, "flutter, flutter, thud" on take off!
What a fun series of images!

What a cliffhanger! Did he get that big fish down?
Nice series of shots!
He does look pleased!! Boom & Gary of the Vwermilon River, Canada.
Great sequence of shots. Love the last one with the big catfish! He does look happy.
I, too, am impressed with the clarity of the last photo.
Amazing pictures, so clear and so close.
they are all FAB shots ... but scratching his itch ... now that one takes the cake!!! LOVE 'em all!
Super shots - especially the scratching one!
Great shots. that heron wasn't going anywhere while catching so many fish - food first! Escape later.
I see pride and elation in that last photo!! Great captures. The 'scratching an itch' is super how you caught it on 'film'.
Camera Girl, I like your story telling using photos.
Oh my..! these are tremendous photos! I guess this bird got a very delicious meal and it looks quite satisfied and proud - yes! :)
Great photos! I got some of one scratching an itch, too, but none of them came out good enough to post. These birds are stunning! I like all of the action shots you got.
I cannot imagine him swallowing that big catfish!
Oh wow- his tummy must have been empty! Nice series!
looks a lot like the one i posted on friday, but yours was a much better fisherheron. :)
Awesome shots! Nice lunch he caught himself.
These could be the illustrations for a book about herons!
Beautiful series of photos!
Greetings from, RW & SK
My goodness, that is a big fish. did he swallow it down? I love the itchy shot. Usually Herons are kinda skittish. You did good. MB
Yes, the heron looks very pleased, as he should be with a catch of that size! Must've been tough to swallow that all in one gulp.
I wonder if he would sell his secret. I've fished all day at times and not caught as many as this thing did. The first shot made me laugh out loud!
Wow, EG! What a great set of pics. I can't get over the size of that catfish.
Lovely series of photos. We love to watch the herons.
He does look pleased with himself!
EG, your series is terrific. I wish I could say that I took the third or sixth photograph. In the winter, I see many heron. Maybe I can do it then.
No to czapla miała ucztę. Wspaniałe zdjecia. Pozdrawiam.
Well, heron was a feast. Great pictures. Yours.
Beautiful shots. This bird is very efficient at catching its dinner.
Hopefully the heron was able to down the catfish, but you don't say. A nice ending to a series of great photos.
Someone needs feather gel in that first shot.
Could it actually fly after all those fish????
Wonderful shots, the bird looks like it has hit the jackpot on the last one!
What a great series of photos. Seems the heron was quite willing to pose for you.
