Savannah Sparrow (Passercilus sandwichensis)
I find many sparrows difficult to identify, but not this one. When I see a yellow patch by a sparrow's eye, I am pretty sure I am looking at a Savannah Sparrow. (FYI: A birder friend has just told me that White-throated Sparrows also have a yellow patch. Thanks, Paul!) But these two are Savannah Sparrows.
Savannah Sparrows are are one of the most common sparrows across North America.
Hopping about in some grass
This sparrow is likely foraging for seeds. However during breeding season Savanah Sparrows also eat insects.

So that's what they are. I have seen in my area but never knew what they were. Thank you Camera Girl.
Yep, I'm with you on that one. It can be frustrating to come away from seeing and and only being able to say, "Well, it was small and it was brown." :-)
This way that way, looks good every way.

Quite a strong contrast in your first photo: delicate bird and barbed wire.
i got to see a flock of these this spring as they migrated north. not quite as bright yellow, then, but still the brow was there. :)
This is why I love your blog!
Beautiful pictures and I learn something too.
Such a pretty little sparrow.

Great shots!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
Pretty little birds.
Ya, I'm pretty sure the other sparrow has a much whiter throat. These are what you say they are, and they're gorgeous. I like sparrows.
I am amazed that you get such good images!!!

I will have to start looking or the yellow patch.
Beautiful mottled pattern on the feathers. A real little cutie.
Pretty little bird. I am horrible at identifying birds, but I do enjoy looking at them.
I occasionally see these little guys in my area. I knew they were sparrows, but had no clue what specific kind they were. Thanks!
