Lift Bridge - the road is UP
This bridge goes over the canal between two cities: Burlington and Hamilton. Large ships pass regularly through the canal from Lake Ontario into Hamilton Harbour, a busy port.
Boat about to go under bridge
I like this canal because vacationing waterfowl from the Arctic spend time here in winter. Although ships pass through, ducks are present when the canal is otherwise quiet.
Road is coming down
You cannot see the traffic, but there are quite a few cars waiting or the road to come back down. It was early morning and a few motorists needed to get to work.
Driving across the bridge
This is what the elevated road looks like when it's back at traffic level.
Bridge seen from east side of pier
After crossing the bridge, we parked and walked out onto the pier that stretches out into Lake Ontario. And look who was swimming in the canal!

What a cool bridge!! It's a great way to have the best of both worlds - and who cares if you have to wait when there are exotica like those amazing ducks to look at??!!
This brings back lots of memories. When I was a kid we lived in Duluth with the famous which has a lift bridge much like this one. We'd go down just to watch the bridge go up! And we drove over it on our honeymoon so many years ago! Thanks for the memories. Looks so cold there, tho!
I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist singing "Low bridge ev'ry body down . . ." :-)
technology is amazing...
Home (to me!)
I always get a little excited when I see the bridge is up. Very soon the shipping season will be over.
Clever idea to accommodate commerce. I like the picture of the boat about to go under the elevated bridge … one can easily image it is sitting on dry land from a distance.
The bridges are fun to watch as they operate, but if one is in a hurry to get to the other side in a vehicle on land, it is a bit of an annoyance to some drivers.
What a neat bridge- great shots of it too, and a cute duck to boot! Looks very chilly there!
Great bridge. I'd love to watch it go up and down. Well, if I wasn't in line to cross it I'd enjoy watching it.
Bridges like this are simply amazing. Who thought up these things?
an engineering marvel!
That's a kind of bridge I've never seen here. Interesting. Happy New Year!
That is an interesting bridge! So glad to get to see it.
Pretty neat. I guess it takes awhile to complete the whole process.
Think we have a couple of bridges like that over here.
Those bridges are engineering marvels! There is one in the Duluth harbor on Lake Superior. It is fun to watch the ships go under.
I love the lighthouse in the background too!
The duck is so beautiful! Interesting bridge, too!
I love bridges - especially draw bridges. We have several over the Willamette River in downtown Portland. It's fun to watch a bridge lift.
Just imagine the traffic if there was no Skyway there!
That is an awesome bridge! WOW! Terrific captures for the day, EG, as always and a great look at your world!! Wishing you beautiful skies, great weather and a very Happy and Productive New Year!!! Enjoy!

Happy 2014 for you and yours.
What a beautiful looking duck and bridge of course. Happy New Year.
Cool looking bridge! And I love the long-tailed duck! Great photos.
Wishing you all the best in 2014, Happy New Year to you and your family!
Happy New Year. Thank you for all the lovely photos you shared this year.
Impressive bridge! Great series of photos!
How cool! We just don't have things like that around here.
Interesting to see how they resolved letting the boats go through (a common "problem" in Holland since there are so many water ways). Great shots as always! Have a happy New Tear:)
Reminds me of home. I like the duck shot.
Neat lift bridge. Many rivers here so many different kinds of bridges. Several in Everet crossing the Snohomish river. Only maddening if one has to wait for a barge or bigger boat to go through. Also maddening if it is a small sailboat with an extra tall mast. LOL MB
Very interesting pictures. I love the look of that Long-tailed Duck.
Great shots of the bridge. Very huge.
That is one strong looking bridge.
We wish you a pleasant year change
Until next year

What a cool bridge! Great shots!
I love those "lifty bridges". You got some great shots of it in action!
Hope you've got some big plans for tonight. We are going "downtown" to celebrate with the masses. :)
That was a rare sight for me. I don't think we have any in the whole of Norway. Very Interesting.
Happy New Year!
Great captures of the bridge, looks like a strong structure.
Happy New Year to you!
Nice shots!
A striking looking duck!
I don't think I've ever been on that bridge- aside perhaps from childhood. Anytime I've passed through the area it's been over the larger skyway bridge.
It would be interesting to watch this bridge....I wonder what it feels like to be on it when it raises up.
