Red DRAGONFLY: White-faced, cherry-faced or ruby meadowhawk
D is for dragonfly and/or damselfly
Ah! Lets leave winter for a few minutes and look back to the past summer when dragonflies and damselflies hunted the wetlands of central Ontario.
Widow Skimmer
I love how they hang onto twigs waiting for smaller tasty insects to happen by.
Blue DRAGONFLY: Blue Dasher
They each appear to have a strong power of concentration.
Blue damselflies: bluets
These damselflies had something else on their minds.
Many thanks to my friend Paul who identified the widow skimmer for me and also made me question whether the red dragonfly is a white-faced, cherry-faced or ruby meadowhawk.Next time I need to take more photos!

I'm always amazed that people can capture these tiny beauties!!!
Dragonflies always seem a bit magical to me as they dart by. You captured the magic so well.
Darla
Their gossamer wings are so beautiful and you captured them well!
Fantastic pictures! I think dragonflies are so poetic and pretty!
It is interesting about the damselflies and how their wings differ from those of dragonflies. Such lovely creatures … and you did such a good job of capturing the lacey resilient wings of each type!
Wow- nice macro shots!
thanks for the warmer post. :)
I like those red ones which I rarely see here.
I cannot believe how beautifully you capture these elusive and flittery creatures. Marvelous! Thank you for sharing.
I didn't know that there were that many different kinds of dragon flies.
the red was my favorite until i reached the bluets... wow, rainbow colored dragon flies... awesome
I never see these guys resting - you have a talent for catching them being still!
I love these guys and you got some wonderful images. They are difficult to identify, though.
Beautiful shots!
I particularly love watching dragonflies in the air, changing direction at a moment's notice. And since they gorge themselves on mosquitoes, they do us a big favour.
Your photos are again wonderful. I rarely get a good shot of dragonflies and damselflies. Isn't it lovely when blogging friends help us with identification? Bloggers are so generous with their help. It's one of the reasons I love blogging so much.
Hi. fantastic close up shots.
Beautiful photos, dragonflies are so delicate

dragonflies are so amazing, but none of my dragonfly pins look like the real thing.

It really was fun seeing these beauties...you know, I did not especially like dragonflies till I started blogging.
Colorful little fellows.
I didn;t know that dragonflies come in so many different bright colors. The things we learn on blogs!
So beautiful are your dragonflies photos!
Great shots!

Wonderful series, so intricate and delicate!
Love the photos of the Dflies. Now how does one differentiate between damsel and dragon?
Lovely summer flashback!
Perfect for the letter D, and I truly enjoyed the trip back to warmer days!
Some lovely "dragons" there. Not surprised you want to remember the summer with all that snow around.
Even though their small - up close they look fierce1 Your captures are beautiful though:)
