Old steam engine
What is it about old trains that we find so fascinating? One day last week my husband and I were in Tottenham, where a group of volunteers runs the South Simcoe Railway.

Sadly, the railway wasn't open the day we were there so I took photos from outside the fence.

Well, I was brave enough to sneak through the open gate to take the last photo. I was actually looking for someone to ask permission to walk in, but when I saw no one, I went back out.

With fantastic visions of steam engines chugging around hills, it is no wonder heritage trains captured our imaginations. They have evolved into something different and more dangerous at times but the love of what they used to be lingers on.
Neat old boxcars! I always thought it would cool to turn one into a garden shed. Now, how to get it into my yard ;)
Love seeing the old railroad equipment, especially that steam engine. It is probably a 4-4-4 or a 4-4-2 making it passenger engine. These are becoming rare, so it's good to see one even in this condition.
Very neat blog. I am glad you got some good pictures even though you couldn't get close. We have a town here called Snoqualmie that has a historic train--I call it a train graveyard. So many old old and decrepit trains. They do have a steam engine with cars that one can ride on too. MB
It's a bit hard to imagine those rickety old carriages actually choofing along the line EG.. but yes I agree old trains make fabulous subjects.. beautifully captured here.

It's a bit sad that they are in such a sorry state and yet they do look cool.
And thanks so much for telling me this was in Tottenham. Now I'm humming the Tottenham Hotspurs football team song. I hate football! ;-)
This is wonderful!! You never see these old wooden train cars anymore. I'm guessing all the workers were gone and they didn't have a guard. Bravo for being brave!! Your first engine shot is wonderful! It looks like a poster and so professional. you really show the ricketiness, and make it into beauty.
Gosh, how lovely. Robert and I just saw a BBC documentary of the history of the steam engine and The Flying Scotsman. There are still steam engines and trains running in England and once in a while we see one come past. amazing things, aren't they? I've only managed new trains: The Spirit of the Flying Scotsman, the Chunnel train and the Rocky Mountaineer . Not quite the same thing, is it? Sometimes I wish I lived in the 1920s. :D

There is something about trains...
The call of the photographic subject sometimes is strong enough to take us where we shouldn't be. I think we've all been there at one point.

Beautiful photos. I think some of the appeal of old engines, for me at least, is that you can see so much of the workings. As for the old wagons being rickety: we bought some old wagons years ago on the farm where I worked to use as pig pens, a purpose which they fulfilled admirably. In time the wooden parts rotted and we thought we'd get rid of them - big mistake. It took weeks to cut up the massive ironwork into manageable sections.
Steam trains are so much more emotive than modern diesel/electric trains. We both had the same idea for our posts this week.

I think it is wonderful taht people takes care of them. And this one is aging in a wonderful way.
I love trains, too. They don't even have to be old. Wouldn't you have loved to be able to look at leisure up close and personal?
