Early November

 Mailbox garden

Grey clouds dominate East Gwillimbury's skies in November but this mailbox is sure to brighten a delivery person's day.

Only a few seeds left

Blue jays and chickadees have been feasting on sunflower seeds.

 White-throated Sparrow

Ground-feeding White-throated Sparrows enjoy eating treats living on the forest floor, such as beetles, millipedes, spiders and snails. During the winter months, though, they will eat millet and black-oil sunflower seeds at feeders. November is an in-between time when they eat animal matter as well as seeds.

Golden tamaracks

Soon the tamaracks will drop their needles and the trees will look dead like other deciduous trees. Come spring and they'll grow new green needles.

The name "tamarack" gets used a lot here in the States for businesses, housing developments, etc. No doubt inspired by the tree.

It is that time of year when the outdoor colours turn blah. You still have manage to find some that are still hanging on.

Great shots. I have only seen the tamarack when it's green, so that was great.

These tamaracks are beautiful!! I wonder if we have them, but I did not know what their name is? Are they a kind of pine? You took an old dead sunflower and made it into art!

I love the look of spent sunflowers. Lovely pic.

It was only when moving up north last year that I learned that the meany "discoloured" trees which I thought would be evergreens were larch or tamarack. And that they weren't dying after all. There seemed to be a lot more last year than this season.

It's good that there are still some trees around with colour on these grey days. We still have a lot of trees with leaves.

Pretty fall pictures. The tamaracks are about the only colour in the woods now except for the odd oak.

I was worried about the tamarack tree that I can see from my window, and then very relieved when it grew new needles in the spring!
