Flat or Steep

Fences on fairly flat terrain

Today, I have two photos - a contrast of fencing on level ground and on a hill.

Gate on the side of a hill?

This hill is as steep as it looks and there's a quick descent from the gate to the gully below. I'm standing on the road on the other side of the gully standing beside a guard rail. I've been trying to figure out why there would be a gate there. Anyone have any bright ideas?

I am linking to Good Fences HERE.

Hmmm, maybe because cows will go just about anywhere if it means food?

Beautiful captures!

Looks like a good place to take a sledge!

Maybe its where people want to get though the fence?

Sorry!

All good fences need a gate! xx

Maybe the farmer rotates where his livestock forages?

Pretty winter scenes and great fence shots! I like Amy's answer above.. Every fence needs a gate.. Have a happy day!

Still pretty co!d over your way EG.. Super snow shots.

Beautiful snow. I have no clue why the gate is in that spot - or why the whole fence is. Keep something out or in?

The fence on both sides of the gate are in different directions which would require a corner post if one wanted to be able to keep the strands tight. Perhaps the owner thought he might as well put in another corner post and put a gate in.
I don't know!!
Nice pic though

I don't know why they did this, but both fences are for sure in beautiful snowy pictures!
Love them :))
Have a fine day

Can they drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle in there to deliver hay to horses in the winter - or something? I've got a lot more questions about it, but no answers. :-) Beautiful photos.

Great pics and contrast of fences. Not sure why the gate was positioned like that. Maybe something to do with property lines requiring a gate in certain sections. LOL just a guess!!
Happy Thursday.

the flat ground shot is gorgeous.. that is an odd place for a gate, it looks like there might be a footpath to it.. i am wondering just how hard it would be to put that fence up standing on a steep hill.. maybe they need the gate to take the cows/horses to the other pasture? or drive their atv through? very odd.

That is a bit odd with the gate being there...

was there a tunnel under the road?

I love the two different views of fencing. Not sure why the gate would be there, just for easier management most likely... in the days when it was a bit harder to get around? Lovely photos :D)

It seems as if there is a small path in the middle of the hill, that leads through the gate. Maybe that's why it's there.

The steep photo is interesting.crazy gate.

Must be a separation for some reason. Possibly different land owners, or times they want to restrict animals from one area to the other. Hard to say, but I'm happy I don't have that steep of a climb to mow! Wow.... what a tumble place that is.

I prefer the steep one. Loves how it follow the curves of nature :)

I assume it's for moving cattle from one pasture to another. Both are beautiful shots!

That must have been a hard go, building fence on a steep hill. It must have been chilly standing there...BRR.

No idea, but the contrast is interesting! If I had to work on a fence, id sure rather get the flat one!

good round pen in the top shot and must be a livestock transfer area in the second. :)

I'd love to know why...doesn't even look like there is a well worn path to it. Lots of fencing in the first...beautiful scenes.

Ya, not really. Seems a weird spot for a gate to me.

What a lovely rural scene!

Never saw a gate on a hillside before. Seems that would be awkward to use. Then again, it has us all drawn to it with speculation. :)

The steep fence line and gate location reveals what appears to be a natural ridge line. Possibly the only logical spot to put the gate. :) From where you took the shot, there's another fence in view. Would need to see a larger view to understand the lay of the land.

Maybe this is the gateway to the walks in the hills. Regards.

Great snowy captures!! Does look like an odd place for a fence, but then what do I know??? You are having some COLD weather and here in Portland it's like Spring???? Take care and stay warm!!

Nice takes. I liked all. Even if the one fence fit was where all think it should not be. Ha-ha.

That hill would be good for a tobaggon.

It goes nowhere. And the ground looks too steep for a house to have been there. A big mystery!

Mari said...

Maybe it's a private property? Or maybe it used to be a gate to a house before? No bright idea here.

My guess....to get to the other side!

Both are really nice shots but that first one I found to be really pretty.

Ida's comment made me laugh and she is right!! Both lovely shots

For sheep to move about! I like that 1st shot a lot, EG!

Hilary said...

A great way to illustrate that contrast. Lovely settings.

Shug said...

Good Question....maybe the ground was softer there and easy to place the post for the gate? Beautiful scenes and I would love to have a little hill near by...
Enjoy the day.

Both are lovely!

Hi! Stunning first image, with paddock, and I think the gate in the second picture is a cattle crossing,...perhaps!

Has it not been brutally cold here!?! The saving factor was at least the sun is shining and we had that fresh snowfall. I too got out last week to enjoy the rolling hills. I do like the look of a fresh snow on the hills sweeping across the fields. Especially when I drive from farm to farm with tea ;0

I bet that fence on the hill was much harder to put in than on the flat.

Love the composition and the fence.
Good ones, Tina.
Peace :)

Nice winter scenes. I have no idea why someone would put a gate on a hill!

Pauline said...

I like the hilly fence scene. If the gate is for stock, some animals move more readily to a gate that isn't at the top or the bottom of a hill. Or maybe the ground is just too uneven at the top of the bottom of the hill. There are probably ten good reasons why it would be there. :)

Must be the way through for sheep or beast or farming equipment.

I love to see fences snake up a hill.

Such lovely scenes. That looks like a good sledding hill.
