Male Red-breasted Merganser

 Male red-breasted Merganser

Yesterday this male Red-breasted Merganser was fishing quite close to where I was standing beside the channel into Whitby Harbour.  I stood very still with my camera as he dove repeatedly amongst sheets of ice. I never knew where he was going to come up for air. But sometimes he surfaced very close to where I was.

Up for some air

Avery handsome fellow. It must be dangerous and cold to be diving under the ice. A tough winter for the birds. Thank goodness for the current sunny days.

he is beautiful, so much detail in his feathers and markings. this looks like the bird we saw on TV news last night, a man in PA ice fishing, pulled one up on his hook, it lived and flew away

Wonderful close ups. The eye is great in the first one and the shades of water are lovely in the second.

He's got some kinda funky hair :)

Hello EG !:)Such beautiful close up captures of the Merganser, showing his red eyes and lovely green head feathers. The water does look icey in the second shot, but it's a lovely colour.

We only have the Common Merganser here. I like yours better. They have so much personality with their wiry hair (feathers?) sticking up all over their heads. Nice pics!

He looks like Fast Eddie with his slicked back 'hair'. MB

Sallie (FullTime-Life) said...

You have good bird Karma! Once a diver goes down, I never see him again)). This is a handsome duck and great photos. Diving in the ice ...and walking in it and taking pictures when it's that cold sounds hard for both the duck and the photographer !
