Male red-breasted Merganser
Yesterday this male Red-breasted Merganser was fishing quite close to where I was standing beside the channel into Whitby Harbour. I stood very still with my camera as he dove repeatedly amongst sheets of ice. I never knew where he was going to come up for air. But sometimes he surfaced very close to where I was.

Avery handsome fellow. It must be dangerous and cold to be diving under the ice. A tough winter for the birds. Thank goodness for the current sunny days.

he is beautiful, so much detail in his feathers and markings. this looks like the bird we saw on TV news last night, a man in PA ice fishing, pulled one up on his hook, it lived and flew away
