Wonky reflections - McKenzie Marsh, Aurora
1. Local marshes are still a dull yellow, but as you can see by the runner on the boardwalk, this marsh is coming to life. Spring birds are beginning to return too.
2. This marsh is in a built-up area and is a great place for urban and suburban humans to reconnect with nature.

3. FYI: marsh is a wetland area where plant growth is made up of mostly cattails, reeds, rushes and sedges.
4. Many wetlands in the Great Lakes area are under stress: toxic runoff, invasive exotic species, artificial changes in water level, filled in, paved over...
5. Why should we care? They
a. help control and reduce flooding in low-lying areas
b. help reduce damage along shorelines
c. filter water for reservoirs
d. attract birds, fish and other animals
e. are great places to take your camera!

I love marshes, unfortunately over the years many of them in the Tulsa area due to the ongoing drought that we have had for years.

I don't know why people have to be so blind to what we are doing to our home. What saddens me the most is the trash that people throw in the water or on the shore- especially plastics.

I have birded this wetland several times. It varies from quite productive to almost devoid of birds.

and add to this problem the air pollution and are planet is in trouble. one of our blog friends in Cananda posted today they were warned to stay inside due to air pollution.
I love wetlands like this as it is so important for critters to live and it is important for humans for many of the reasons you talk about...

Wetlands are fascinating habitats, sadly so badly taken care of in too many places.
I live in Lake County and the taxes are very high, but we don't mind because they use a great deal of money to buy and restore wetlands and forest preserves as well as the lake front. Good to hear you explain the importance. Every bit of education that can get out there may help save more wetlands ... and support all of nature. Love your Wonky Reflections, EGC ...

You are lucky, we have nothing like this around here. I would just love sitting there and watching the fish, turtles, and birds.

I'm totally with you on marsh! Marsh are slowly dying in my state/city to the urban development and as dumping yard.
We sure love OUR wetland. We are surrounded. It's lovely.
I wish all marshes could be protected but it's not the case here yet though we're getting there! The whole city of Versailles is built on former marshes! Lovely shots EG, I see it's getting warmer if joggers are sleeveless!
