Male Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) in breeding colours
This bobolink is sitting high up in a spruce tree wearing his fanciest colours!
Before traveling north from their wintering grounds in south-central South America, male Bobolink's moult to have feathers with yellow tips, but on their journey across the Gulf of Mexico to southern Canada, the tips wear off revealing stunning black and white feathers.
After breeding in hayfields and pastures, bobolinks move to freshwater marshlands and moult again. During the non-breeding season, male and female bobolinks look very much alike in brown and buff plumage.

Great photos and interesting information about the seasonal plumage changes. We don't have Bobolinks here so it was nice to see and learn a bit about them!
He's a pretty boy! We had reports of Bobolinks near me, but when I went to the area I couldn't find them. Would love to see one. Just one! :)
Many wardrobe changes, EG!

Very nice. I've heard the name but don't think I've seen one before. And I do appreciate your informational commentary!
Your little bobolink is balancing very prettily for you here EG, bet he didn't stop for long, well captured .
How interesting about the feather colors. We don't have bobolinks here so I enjoyed learning a little about them.
Superb capture with the bird and nice learning about it a bit!
Lovely capture.
What a cute little guy! Does he have a nice song too?
What a gorgeous little bird! Beautiful!
Beautiful bird and photo also.
We have a lot of Bobolinks around the fields and hedgerows here and I enjoy their songs throughout the day. I didn't know these facts about them though. What a long way some birds travel to get here! Your photo is beautiful.
What a pretty fellow, I'd never heard of him!
I love Bobolinks. They are a blackbird that we DO NOT have here in Arizona. If one does visit, it's extremely rare. So enjoy these beauties. I loved them so much during my visit to Maine that I just snapped pic after pic. Congrats!
Oh to see a Bobolink one day, what a beauty you captured!
