Broad-winged hawk Buteo platypterus) atop a utility pole
I had only seen broad-winged hawks high up in large kettles during fall migration, so I was delighted to spot this one low enough to photograph.
OOPS! Giving me the evil eye
They are most often seen in forest interiors so not usually easy to find. But this one was surprisingly tolerant of me until...
Gone!

Not a bird that we ever see over here so I'm delighted to make his acquaintance through your super photographs.
Excellent shots EG, it's always so exciting to catch a pic of these amazing creatures.. when they move it's so unbelievably fast!
Awesome raptor and great photos! Enjoy your day!
Must of decided you and your camera were not the right kind of prey. :-)
He stayed just long enough.
magnificent bird.
Gorgeous shots of that handsome fellow! Well-spotted!
Thanks for the vocabulary lesson. I couldn't find a definition of kettle that was consistent with a hawk until I went back and reread the words "a group." These are wonderful photos.
he might have been eyeing you for size to see if you were a meal or not.. he ia a beauty. we are now completely without squirrels, not one to be found and no birds but the two resident hawks.
Great pictures! You caught it on take-off...
how neat. that large eye is impressive. :)
Such a handsome guy. Great shots.

Great shots - I love the last one where you can see all the detail of the bands on the tail.
What an impressive looking bird and superb pictures.
That's a new one for me! I like that last shot with his feet tucked up! ;-)
What a beautiful bird. Great shots, I especially enjoyed the one in flight.
So fantastic! You are lucky to capture the moment!
Gone but not to my place. I need you so badly! You can feast on pigeons! Come on over here you beauty!
Super find. I have such a hard time telling Hawks apart. A few I know by sight but they can be so similar.
Hummingbirds usually come back about Mid March and April. I wish we had the kind that come around in flocks but this guy defends this feeder as if he bought it himself.

That is a handsome hawk. How lovely of him to pose for you even for a few minutes. And how lovely of you to share. (And how I envy that you got that great flight shot.)
Fierce! And great pictures! Here, they sit on the sides of the interstate way up high in trees waiting for road kill.
Beautiful shots as always...well captured..
Wonderful shots, EG! He is such a handsome bird.
WOW! That bird certainly gave you some good poses. Fantastic photos.
Gorgeous bird! I have a couple of red shouldered hawks frequenting my back yard this year. They seem to be keeping all the other birds away unfortunately.
Your photos are marvelous! I've never seen one. Hopefully one day I will.
Wow - those shots are marvellous!
