Eastern wood-pewee (Contopus virens)
This is a flycatcher well-known for looping out of exposed perches to catch flying insects. Trust me, he was in the right place for a hearty meal. (I know because I returned home having been bitten a few times.)
Here he's atop a tall dried weed on the edge of cattail swamp. He was quiet when I took this photo so I didn't hear him call the sound that gives him his name: "pee-ah-wee."
I am connecting to Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday HERE

Beautiful bird! I have some like this here at home but they are black and white in the feathers.
They say here that this year we can get a record of mosquitos so I'm glad that we have birds that like this insects.
Have a really nice day!
WOW! Que lindo e fez pose pra ti! Adorei! bjs, chica
Could have used his help yesterday on my walk beside a canal. :-)
Good bird to have in the neighborhood. Wonder if I could get him to hang out around our patio.

Great post and photo of the Pewee. Hope he catches a lot of skeeters. Have a happy day!
I think he knew you were taking his picture so he posed in a manner that shows his best side!
Great capture! Love bird!
he is a cutie.. and has a great job. hope he eats skeeters to
What a cutie. And a handy bird to have around too.
so glad you could i.d. him as i'd have been lost in the 'flycatcher' section. :)
Great it posed for you, a great catch.
What a cute little guy and I do love the name "pee-ah=wee"!!! Another delightful post for the day!! Thanks as always for sharing!
He is quite sweet, EG!
A new bird to see.
You caught this guy just right. Looks a bit like our King Bird that also eats insects. I am allergic to mosquito bites so the more of these birds the better.
You know your birds and flowers well.
Quite distinguished looking!
He was posing for you. Cutie!
I'm amazed at all the birds you get to see! Lovely little bloke (or girl!)
I hear them out back right now. For a small bird, they can make a loud sound.
I would really need one of these on my terrace...
He is such a pretty little bird...I am not sure I have ever seen one. But I seem to remember my dad mentioning seeing them. (That was a LONG time ago)
He looks very alert on his perch. I like the feathers that stick up on his head, they give him a perky look.
Glad to know nay bird that gobbles up biting insects. Great shot.
Stunning capture.
Reminds me a lot of the Kingbirds here - grey head, yellow belly a bit of white under the chin and darts out to grab bugs.
Great photo capture of an interesting bird.
How sweet!
You got a great shot of him.
So is the moral of that story if you see a Flycatcher, is stay well away.
good photo and interesting facts! Plus the story behind the shot. I'm taking notes here! Another winning post

Excellent capture. I have never seen one before so I am glad to see yours.

Beauty bird , even if he's not doing a good enough job eating those mosquitoes;)). They never do, bug bites are definitely the downside of birding around here.
What a beautiful bird with such pretty markings. You captured a great shot. Lovely~
Hugs, CM
Gorgeous bird and what a pretty pose!
Very nice portrait! It looks as if he wanted to give you a perfect pose.
He sounds like he fills the same role as our local swallows.
Looks very proud.
Really handsome fella, a first for me.
lovely photo
Beautiful photo of this wonderful bird! Sorry you had to get bitten a few times to get the shot!
Hello Camera Girl,
I noticed you on my friend, Celestina's blog. You have many wonderful pictures, and I chose this post to comment on because I love the birds so. I often see blue jays, robins, and even the red headed woodpeckers in my area. This is a different looking bird, not familiar with it. Me and my daughters also have a blog, and we would love it if you could visit us and follow. We love Photography too. I would certainly come back and follow you as well. I hope to hear from you, and have a sweet day.
