Belted Kingfisher

 Female Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alycon)

Whenever I visit the McKenzie Marsh in Aurora, I listen for the chatter - a rattling sound -  of a Belted Kingfisher, which means it's establishing its territory. Then it's time to look up to find the bird's perch over the creek that runs through the marsh because the bird is hunting for aquatic goodies, it's main diet.

Belted Kingfisher #2

I was hoping my lens would catch it with a fish in its mouth but I had no such luck. Maybe NEXT time!

I am connecting to Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday HERE

Kingfisher by David Wood

The sudden flash of delicate blue
That lightning strike of wondrous true
There, gone in the blink of an eye,
And no matter how hard you try,
The only evidence were the rings
Of bright water that sweetly sings.

A new bird to me. Kingfishers we have but not a belted one with this colouring. Lovely birds, so tiny and not easy to capture. Great shot.

I am sO envious! I see Kingfishers fairly often on both coasts. But I swear all I have to do is think the word camera and even if they've been sitting still for hours they take off. I have only ever managed one bad photo. But really I'm grateful to you for sharing, I love the bird and am happy to see such beautiful, portraits!
