On the other side of the marsh- Great Egret and Great Blue Heron
Last Saturday Great Egrets (Ardea alba) were seen fishing in many places at Cranberry Marsh in Whitby. In late August the egrets are finished breeding and many move into this marsh for great fishing. GREAT except they were all very far away!
A little closer
Finally an egret decided to move closer to the viewing platform.

I haven't been to the Cranberry Marsh since the spring. Your photos of the Egret make want to return. Did you notice the purple loosestrife in the background of your first photo? It appears to making a comeback.
The marshlands are incredibly beautiful and greatly captured. Love the violet streaks of color in the greenery.

So beautiful! Is purple loosestrife considered an invasive plant there? It is here.
Nice landscape and bird photos.
The second picture I think is close enough fof us to admire its beauty.
Oh the popular invasive plant :) They're actually pretty, I like their color a lot but I guess they would have been much loved if they were willing to share the land :)
Love your great pictures!!
Showboating! :-)
Excellent capture and hope it was a nice move for them there.
Good morning, pretty shots of the egret, heron and the ducks. The purple flowers are pretty too. Have a great day!
These are great!
I was going to ask what the purple flower is, and see someone has done provided an answer. It sure enhances that first photography.
I'm glad the egret moved closer, he (or she) gave you a super photo op!
They look so big and so graceful at the same time...
Magnificent birds. You had a beautiful setting for looking at them as well.

I love seeing egrets but they're hard to get a photo of. They're quite shy and don't like you getting too close. So what are those interesting purple-blooming plants in the background? I figured you know because you so knowledgeable much about native plants and grasses in your area. And is that a blue heron in the foreground? Love both of these shots.
I actually said Ohhhh when that first photo came up. the colors are beyond description...
Thought it's far away but the photos turn out good
The egrets make such good reflections EG, added to the reflections of the purple bushes in the water.. fabulous!
Looks like it was a beautiful day there, the reflections are beautiful, as is the great egret. They are hard to get but you snapped a great picture! Have a great day!phyllis
That's quite a display of loosestrife in the background.
I love these egrets! Although, I think I would've called them cranes out of not knowing any better. Beautiful captures!
I love the first photo with the purple loosestrife as a backdrop. Nice captures!
Long necks with the purple loosestrife - striking combination!
Super shot of bird and reflection in your close-up!
Beautiful captures as always!! Love those long-neck birds!! Hope your week is off to a great start!! Enjoy!!
I wonder how these birds get along with each other.
What a winner that first shot is. Such a dreamy lake of purple.
Thank you for such restful and beautiful shots today.
What beauties!
Two beautiful birds in these shots.
I usually favor close-up photography, but the first one with that gorgeous background and reflection is spectacular!
They're beautiful...and to top it all off - the flower backdrop is extraordinary!
Awesome captures of these beautiful creatures!!! I love the background landscape!!!!
I don't think I've ever seen an Egret up here - have only seen them in Florida. Love that first shot with the 2 fabulous birds, EG!
What great photos of the egrets. And I like the colorful background in your first image.
Beautiful shots! I particularly like the last one.
Love the first image of those purple flowers.
Great close photo of the egret but the photo with the pink/purple photos on the far side of the pond is also very beautiful.
GREAT! Whatever the size and color. Nice work.
Such a graceful looking bird. I like that last shot.
They may be farther away, but the pictures are still fantastic.
Hi Tina,
The Heron and the Egret are definitely very nice, but so is the reflection of the purple flowers in the water with green flotilla.
Superb shots!
Have a Great Day!
Peace :)
Cute egrets, great shots!
Very well taken, especially the one with reflection.
It's so sad. Summer is over, so cool today. All our babies are hatched and done. Raccoons going nuts. Birds flocking in the forest.
Beautiful photos! Great that you caught both birds in one shot. Love it!
These are great shots both far away and close up!
The colors and reflections in the first shot are wonderful. And the heron is giving you a nice profile.
Love these birds. Beautiful waterscape too and nice reflections when you got the one up close.
I will see these guys in Naples in two months.
