American Wigeon

 Male wigeon (Anas americana)

Although  some American Wigeons are said to breed in Ontario, they are are somewhat rare here...unless it's migration season when they make stopovers at ponds and marshes. This male - along with a few others - was getting closer to where I was standing and I was hoping to get a super shot when...

Up and away

something happened and they all took off. I'm thinking there was a raptor in the area.

I am connecting to Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday HERE

I've seen male pigeons, although I don't know how I would know the diff between male and female, but I've not seen a male widget, er, wigeon, before! :)

I love the look of the widgeon...never saw one here.

now i wonder if they have passports to get from here to there... i have never seen one, so they must live in the NORTH America... of course these days unless they land in our pool i don't see anything.

I think you may be right EG, those falcons sure know how to break up a party :)

Great 'portrait' and even better action shot...

I like the flying action shot.

Very distinctive. I guess they tend to keep to the countryside... I can't recall seeing one in the city.

Oh, gorgeous photos, as always. We're beginning to see more and more flocks of birds migrating, small flocks for now but a lovely sight.

Nice shots! It is quite a sight to see a bunch of birds all take off from water at the same time.

Pretty thing. So it wasn't the sound of your camera shutter? :-)

Great to get that nice taking flight shot ... I can almost hear them!

We had a good sized flock that was bedding down last winter not too far from our house...but it was always too far to get a decent shot. They make interesting sort of whistling sounds.

Beautifully captured!

The Wigeon swimming on the blue water is especially beautiful. Trying to guess when and why birds take flight is a constant puzzle I think!

The Wigeon is beautiful. And what a good timing to capture the up, up and away shot!

That's what I've heard! I have a friend in Maine who had a hard time finding one. Down here right now, they are everywhere!
