Start kids young loving the environment and our planet will have a much better chance of surviving climate change, I bet. These two are waiting for chickadees to discover the seed in their hands.
Close encounter with a Hairy Woodpecker
This two-year-old boy was delighted when the woodpecker landed in his dad's hands. Dad is a seventh-grade science teacher who brings a busload of kids from his classes to this conservation every year. His lucky son doesn't have to wait till he's 13 to have this experience.

that little girl reminds me of me when I was little and seeing the mallard ducks in Boston at the Public Gardens! I am still 'gleeful' when I see animals of all kinds.

I've never seen a woodpecker eat from someone's hand but the Downy woodpeckers at my mother's feeders sit right above your head while you fill the suet feeder so maybe they could be coaxed onto the hand. Nice post, EG!

Love this! Pure joy ! And they are lucky kids ... The 13 year olds in their dads classes are lucky too, but not quite as!
Children and animals are such a great combination! I remember how my children took care of a young black bird, a mere fledgling, who fell out of the nest.

I can't imagine getting to do that in school! I would have been beyond thrilled.
My son (adult) wintered over a white crowned sparrow who had missed the migration last year, in a cage in his cabin. He rather hoped it might stay behind this year, too, but is buying weiners to feed to the weasel who lives on the property and has befriended him instead...
