Air India Memorial/Our World

Air India Flight 182 Memorial, Etobicoke, Ontario

This is a memorial that marks a tragedy, an act of terrorism that happened off the coast of Ireland on June 23, 1985. The bombing of Air India Flight 182 killed 329 passengers and crew. Sadly, the act was planned on Canadian soil.

Another view of the sundial

Rocks from countries directly affected by the tragedy - every Canadian province and territory, Ireland, India, Japan and the United States - support the sundial.

Another view

Victims names are inscribed on the wall behind the sundial.

Sad to think about the tragic wake left behind by so many unthinking and unfeeling people in the world. So perhaps memorial like this will sensitize more folks to the need to find more creative solutions to the world's problems.

The memorial is beautifully planned and designed...very tasteful. Yes, too bad and very tragic that it had to be built at all. Scary that there are so many violent people all around us and walking the streets and using our technology to maim or kill us.

Very nice memorial. Reminds me of "the Wall" that has my nephew's name on it.

I don’t think I knew about the sundial. It likely does not bring solace to the folks who lost their loved ones but it is a sign of respect. I do like the idea of bringing together rocks from the different countries involved. It is a shared symbol of strength and also of horror at such a devastating act of hatred.

So sad that anyone would wipe out a plane full of people through terrorism.
It is a lovely memorial, though. I like the idea of using rocks from the different countries to represent those lost.
