Early July

Mama Wood Duck out for a swim

Summer scenes

It's hard to believe it's already close to the middle of July...but it is!  The mallards have begun to moult, as you can see in the largest square.  Moving clockwise, one male and two females are hiding in he grass on a tiny island in a small pond. Purple raspberry blossoms are flowering beside the pond and black-eyed susans and milkweed are too. And the first of the egrets in my area are out foraging for fish.

Everything seems well with the world, at least as far as the Mallards and Wood Ducks are concerned. As someone who loves ducks I always feel cheated at this time of year when the males go into their drab eclipse plumage.

We have wood ducks in the area, but somehow I'm never where they are at the same time.

Yes, it's pretty well mid-summer, as long as you don't get too technical about dates anyway. Gardens are in full bloom and critters are doing what they need to do.
