Iron Horse/ Theme Day
This one-of-kind iron, seven-and-a-half-foot-high sculpture was created by a local blacksmith/artist. The sculpture, mounted on railway ties because railway engines are sometimes referred to as iron horses, now stands in front of the Mount Albert Public School, celebrating the reason why Mount Albert, first settled around 1800, is still a thriving community today.
A century ago, Mount Albert was a major railway junction of three lines. Other communities that were settled at about the same time as Mt. Albert began to lose their population when the tracks skirted around their homes and businesses and stopped instead at stations in Mount Albert and Brown Hill.
Each class at the school gets to create a time capsule of artwork, which is placed in a box on the horse's side. (You can see four boxes on this side.) When the students reach grade 8, they get to open their box and look through their time capsule.
Community contributions were also placed in the sculpture. Their box will be opened in 2050. Hmmm. I wonder what they put in there!

Fantastic sculpture... I'd love to see that for real, but your pcture will do me fine :O)
I absolutely love this horse. What a wonderful sculpture and great for the school kids and the community. MB
He reminds me of a Dali sculpture!
Very nice! And all metal too, what a lovely way to mark theme day!
Oh how utterly beautiful. I just love this. Imagine, had we not had the Theme Day, you'd maybe not have published this and we'd not have seen it. Great art I say.
I love good horse sculptures, and this is a good one!
Most excellent manufacture, splendid creation with very imagination!
Marvellous post!
Fantastic idea and artwork.
This is a great sculpture! I love somewhat abstract, yet still recognizable pieces of art, and this certainly fits the bill!
Its a great visual pum and a good Theme day shot.
great picture and nice explanation
you should put a copy of your pictures in there!
What a great sculpture. I'm going to have to go up the road to see it in person. I also like the idea of a time capsule.
That's a very interesting story. And I love the idea of the iron horse representing the railway in Mt Albert. (did I tell you I used to live in Brown Hill?)
Cool picture. Thanks for the educational portion. I like the clever name, Iron Horse.
Very neat sculpture!!
