Northlander engine 1801 passing under an EG bridge and heading north
All aboard!
Six mornings a week (Sunday through Friday) year round, the Northlander leaves Canada’s largest city (Toronto) and heads northward toward the quaint, far-north town of Cochrane on "the edge of the Arctic."
FYI: Travel brochures like to say "the edge of the Arctic" but Cochrane's latitude is really only 49°N and the Arctic Circle is 66°N. Good grief! EG is 44°N and we're nowhere near the Arctic!
Along the Northlander's route, it passes through East Gwillimbury, part of the "scenic countryside" advertised in O.N. (Ontario Northland) Railway brochures.And six evenings a week, another Northlander passes through EG, heading south from Cochrane to Toronto.
The trip by passenger train from Toronto to Cochrane is a 697 kilometers and takes approximately 11 hours, lots of time in which to read a book or maybe take a nap, the brochure promising that Ontario Northland provides comfortable seats, good food and a stress-free ride
No caboose!

ds used to ride that train when he first went to Uni in North Bay and it was never on time!!!!
They once sat for two hours just outside of Union Station as there was no room for the train to go into the station. Meanwhille dh is driving around and around the block!!!

Those trains are very beautiful. We have watched on Tv program here , which is called "Rail away". It deals with all kind of raiway travels all over the world and it's very interesting too.

So now I see (from the map) where you live...near Toronto. One of these days I'll make it to visit your area. Fun to see the old trains. We've ridden old trains in Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Holy Cow! What fantastic shots of the train! I've not been in your area, but my sister lived in Toronto and in Kitchener in the past. I lived in Ottawa for almost 3 years and traveled to Huntsville once for a figure skating event my daughter was in. So I sort of know the area and it's gorgeous, especially in the autumn!
Oh, this was delightful! I just adore trains! One of these days I want to take a vacation as much by train as is possible.

Eleven hours to travel 700 km? I guess when you have to stop in every little place along the way it drops your average speed down quite a bit eh?
But if I had the time, I rather think a rail trip would be a pleasant way to travel. Lots of good photo opportunities along the way in any case!
And placing Cochrane on the "edge of the arctic" would be kind of like placing Raleigh on the "edge of the tropics". Not entirely accurate, though the way the weather can be in the summer here you might think otherwise.
Speaking of, my Hurricanes will be visiting T.O. tomorrow evening and trying to duplicate what they accomplished here at RBC Center yesterday. But I don't think they'll be arriving by rail!

Write to your member, petition Ottawa, lead a march but get it reinstated. Such a historic train without one is unthinkable.

Great pictures for an interesting travel in your Northern world.I love traveling by train, it gives so much time to appreciate the travel with no fatigue at all. It's our family choice, as far as it is possible.
