yeah turkeys are quick!! We have a bunch of them around here. I have failed everytime i have tried to get photos of them.
I caught a pic one time when I surprised them as they surprised me. I have never seen them fly off only run real fast. Not too many out here though. MB
i like your first photo. great capture. I am glad you enjoyed the Scottsdale Art Walk photos on my site. It is a fun thing to do on a Thursday night. I am back to cactus today!
I really like the second photo! Since I have been trying to get photos of birds flying, I can tell how much work went into it!!
The turkey population around here has been booming, the last 10 years. I have been told there are two distinct flocks - one of actual wild turkeys, and another of feral turkeys.
I've never seen one flying before! Great catch.
But those have character!
Love your photos. We don't have wild turkeys, here, but I'm reminded of when we were visiting, Marinette, WS, and I got up for an early morning stroll. A wild turkey and I startled each other. We were about 6 feet apart!
Those are great for roasting! Kidding! I always have a little fear of turkeys as I do with geese, they seem to be angry and ready to poke you! lol. Happy Weekend!

There are some wild turkeys on the the grounds of Disney World in Orlando. I've seen them hanging around the grassy areas the surround the Magic Kingdom parking lot. Yours look like they are made of mosaic - the colors are very pretty!

The closest I ever got to a wild turkey was in a car. I suspect that's not a viable option.

You've got a great shot of the turkey! I find it very difficult to get good pictures from birds in flight.
Considering their flighty nature I think you got a great shot.
I'm noticing yours are a little more colorful around the head than the ones I see.

Aren't you people eating turkey at every festive occasion you can think of? Smart birds to fly off as soon as they see someone who wants to 'shoot' them ;-)
Wild turkeys will spook if they see the least little thing out of place. About the only way to get close in on them is to find a place where they are acclimated to human presence.

I'm about to say something that will probably sound really stupid but... I didn't know turkeys could fly. LOL! :-D I've only ever seen them penned up awaiting the line-up at Thanksgiving.
It's good to see you are photographing the turkeys too. They can be very difficult to get. I have been lucky in that I live in a remote area with a large turkey population and the birds have become somewhat used to seeing me with the camera. One must still use reasonable caution, but I don't need to be completely concealed, etc. As long as I make no sudden moves they will feed and strut, etc. around where I am positioned.
A few years ago, they were so wary that one had to hide in a blind with a hole just large enough to get the end of the lens through and they would still run if they saw the lens move. I guess the current situation came from spending a lot of time in their area along with little turkey hunting being done there. When hunted hard, they become one of the most elusive species! I would rather photograph them than hunt them and have not hunted them for over ten years.
Well, I count both as decent shots!
