Bird on a Wire/ Camera Critters

Overlooking a two-lane highway

Lately I've noticed a number of hawks in trees or on wires watching cars go by. What's that all about?

They're probably putting together a business plan - checking out the numbers - so they can hawk their wares?

No?

Sheesh.

Such a beautiful shot. You knew I'd ask what kind of hawk this is...right?

Jacob, I think this is a red-tailed hawk. They seem to be the most common around here.

Those birds should be called "highway hawks" or "highwire hawks," non?! Timing is everything - great shot!

I think they are looking for 'road kill'. Easy pickings.
Beautiful shot and you say they won;t hold still for you.

Yes the days are getting longer.
Sunrise: 7:30
Sunset: 5:16
Temp at 5:30---34F and rain forcast.

And soon the sun will shine there again.

We've got hawks too, but I've never gotten this close for a photo.

"What's all that about?" is possibly the question in the hawk's mind! All those cars and all that rush and all that impatience...
God bless you!

Oh wow....did you stop on the highway to snap the photo? I've been tempted to do that when I see fowl around the highways, but I fear being hit.

Here is my C C...do hope you can stop by sometime today.

Maybe they are waiting for corpse to be in highways ??? If they have no food they have to find some way to get food. Cats and rabbits are often road kills and food for them maybe ?

What a beautiful bird in pic !

Great shot of the hawk. They sit on the wires here too but looking over the fields for lunch. I find them very nervous about being photographed and take flight on me.

Great shot indeed! Maybe the hawks think that cars are some kind of animals ... This is at least what seem to think my dogs ... Anything that moves is an animal for them :-)

Or they might be collecting some pics for their weekend human meme.

All your answers are right on! It is, indeed a red-tail, and they are high-way hawks in the winter! Sometimes it seems as though they do line the highway in large numbers. Great photo! ~karen

Red-tails are a fixture along our highways also always on the lookout for a free meal from the road-kill cafe.

Beautiful capture! They must be following you because they want their picture taken!
