We're Outta Here!/ Watery Wednesday

A female with two male common mergansers, photo taken last Saturday

This photo was a challenge. The males were swimming quietly and easy to capture with my lens. BUT the female was darting in and out, moving forward, turning around.  She was a "Nervous Nellie!"

Two common mergansers not at all impressed by me and my camera

I think this photo looks like a cartoon: the splashing water, the female's "hair-do." What do you think?

Hoggs Falls/ MyWorld

Hoggs Falls

Hoggs Falls is located in a forest preserve in Grey County, western Ontario east of Lake Huron. It's still wild and wonderful with no platforms or fences.

My husband and I weren't planning to visit any falls on Saturday but, as it turned out, we saw three. (Two future posts as well as this one.)  Grey County locals say the falls are not as grand as they usually are this time of year - not much rain or snow this past winter. But since I have never seen them before, I thought they were great.

Capturing waterfalls with my lens wasn't as easy as I'd hoped it would be. First off, see the snow? Well, there was also slippery mud - which the mud on my jeans will attest to - and I dared not go too close to the edge to get a better look or to take a better photo. As you can see I was on on the same level as the river BEFORE the water went over the falls. It's  25 feet straight down.

In the first photo, you can see icicles to the right. Here you see them close up, taken with my telephoto lens.

Horning's Mills

Reflections yesterday in pond at Horning's Mills, Ontario

We were out for a drive yesterday and happened upon a hamlet called Horning's MIlls in western Ontario. It was settled in 1830 and by the turn of the twentieth century the settlement had six or seven mills and 350 inhabitants. I'm not sure a census could scrape together that many people there now.

If you squint, you can see a little waterfall and I'm thinking this may have been the location of one of the mills. If it weren't for the cedar, everything in this photo would look brown and grey. Unfortunately, the sky was grey too. In spite of that, it was actually a very nice day.

Farm Pond/ Watery Wednesday

Hey, guys! The ice is off the pond. Let's swim!

Doesn't this metal sculpture look like it's thinking about jumping in?  It was raining slightly, but the bird didn't seem to care.

OOPS! O.P.P./ Ruby Tuesday

Oh-Oh! What are those flashing red and blue lights?

POLICE!
But never fear! The police officer turned his lights on so I could take a photo of the them flashing  TRUE!

My husband and I stopped at a coffee shop on a provincial highway patrolled regularly by the Ontario Provincial Police, a.k.a. O.P.P. Two officers were inside drinking, well, coffee. Outside, I was taking photos of their patrol cars. Unbeknownst by me, they were watching. OOPS!

When I went inside to get some coffee, they asked me if I wanted a photo of flashing lights.  Wasn't that thoughtful?

T is for.../ Macro Monday

T for Tribal
Tribal Voices is the name of a shop in Port Perry. The name above the door is made up of individual carved letters.  I'm not sure why elephants are part of the carving but I am guessing the letters were carved in Indonesia.

Tribal Voices sells a variety of items made in Indonesia such a silver jewellery, teak furniture and home accessories .

Museum Barn/ Sepia Scenes

Old barn on the grounds of the Sharon Temple Museum, Sharon (East Gwillimbury), Ontarioo

East Gwillimbury, like most of the towns around here, has a museum honouring the first settlers in the area. The people who first settlers in Sharon (one of five main communities that make up EG) were the Children of Peace (aka Davidites), a Quaker breakaway sect inn the early 19th century led by David Willson who had a passion for music in religious services, unlike his contemporary Quakers.

This is one of the buildings on the museum grounds.

It Must Be Spring/ Watery Wednesday

Puddles everywhere!

The weather is glorious and the snow is melting. A walk in the forest means ice in the shady spots and mud in the sunny ones. And many farmyards are puddles. Yep, it's SPRING!
