Sunday afternoon five Trumpeter Swans flew into Whitby Harbour with great fanfare!

In contrast, Mute Swans - as their name suggests - are very quiet.

Last Sunday was a cold but sunny day, sunny enough for ice to melt and break off from the pier at the entrance to Whitby Harbout.

Rough-legged Hawk

 Rough-legged Hawk  (Buteo lagopus)

My husband and I had heard there were Rough-legged Hawks in the area but we hadn't seen any...until we headed home from a photo shoot a little north of where we live. Truth be told, I passed this hawk and then turned around! From a distance I thought it was a red-tailed hawk.  But as I passed it I knew I had been WRONG.

Head turned 180°

He/she let me take a few photos and them flew off to a tree where it's mate was sitting. So there were actually TWO of them, but they were way too far off to take another photo. They are visiting from The Arctic.

Can you believe this bird can turn it's head around 180°?

Old Steeple

In disrepair and the bell is gone (unless that's a small bell way up high)

I'd like to know more about the history of this steeple, but the building is no longer a church. So far I have not found any information about this mysterious looking structure.

A Jolly Roger (aka pirate flag)

J is for JOLLY

The skull and crossbones flag looks ominous to me but I'm pretty sure the flag above was flying just for fun...but I dunno for sure. The term Jolly Rogers for black flags with smiling skulls goes back at least three centuries, and the originals meant business. Serious business.

A Jolly Roger was not flown most of the time but was raised - often accompanied by a warning shot - when a pirate ship was about to take over another ship. It warned the captain on the victim ship to surrender - no harm would be done to anyone on board.  If the victim ship resisted, the Jolly Roger was replaced by a red flag and there would be no mercy.

And now for something completely different

Dark-eyed Junco

Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)  on fence

Although Juncos live here in central Ontario year-round, I rarely see them except in winter. Most of the year, these sweet, gentle birds forage in forests, but when wild food is harder to find, they hop around at the base of bird feeders cleaning up after fussier birds.

Although I usually see Juncos on the ground, the top photo shows a Junco that flew up onto a fence to get treats.  The second photo shows a Junco on a limb where  it could survey the area to make sure it was safe to eat seeds it could see on the snow-covered ground below.

Rusty Hay Rake

From my archives, I confess.

Raking hay was (and still is) an important summer job on many farms. The number of animals a farmer could keep over winter depended on the amount and quality of the hay cut and collected. The invention of the horse-drawn rake was a huge boost to production. A horse drawn hay rake could do the work of eight humans with hand rakes.

Sunlight and Clouds

Hazy sun over icy water, Whitby Harbour on Lake Ontario

Last Tuesday it looked cold and it WAS!  But the sun was shining! (sort of)

In the above photo between the fence and the breakwater, it looked like the harbour was only partially covered in ice. Actually, it was ALL ice, some of which (the part that's blue) had melted in the past and then refrozen.

The second photo was taken the same day to the left of the first and, as you can see, is further out into Lake Ontario where the air was hazier as well as cloudier.

Front Porch

 Front porch shadows

Yesterday was a rare sunny day ripe for shadows.  Actually, I was driving down a country road looking for interesting shadows on snow.  Then I saw these! How could I NOT stop?

 Unfortunately the porch had pillars holding up the roof so finding a good angle - from the road - was tricky.

Icy Stare

Not impressed with CameraGirl

"Hey, CameraGirl, it's -8°C (18°F) and you want me to smile?"

Actually, I was smiling because the temperature felt kinda warm after the past few days. But I had been in my cozy car and this horse may have been outdoors for a while before I got there. Maybe he/she was feeling a bit chilly. Anyway, I do think this is a not-so friendly stare.

Brush, Rinse, Smile

 Reflection in a dentist's window

 The wording on the window suggests passerby to floss, brush, rice and smile. Hmmmm. Even the reflection is not sure it wants to smile.

Raising it's eyebrows?

The brickwork above each window appears to be raising it's eyebrows in surprise  at the suggestion of smiling in the dentists' office.

My apologies to all you dentists out there!I was just having fun, really I was.
