Bronze statue of Tom Thompson, Huntsville, Ontario
The plaque beneath this statue reads:
To the memory of Tom Thompson
1877 - 1917
An artist, woodsman, guide and dreamer
whose brilliant vision defined the Canadian wilderness and
captured the majesty and many colourful moods of Algonquin Park.
Thompson has become more famous after his death than when alive and now his paintings fetch big prices whenever they are sold.
Added later after 12 comments: Here's a Website where you can see some of Thompson's paintings: HERE

His teacher probably didn't appreciate that he was a dreamer. But I suppose, one has to have big dreams to succeed.
Interesting. I think I'll Google his name and see if I can locate any of his paintings.

That was interesting I didn't know that about him. I haven't been to Huntsville in ages.

What a neat statue. It is so detailed and almost alive. A great tribute. I used to daydream so much in school but I didn't turn out to be famous---of course I am still alive and hope to be for quite a while. haha!! MB
Whoever did the statues was pretty darn good too!
This is a wonderful tribute. And he died so young? Do you know of what causes?
Beautiful statue and lovley tribute EG.
I think I'll Google his name too.
Have a nice week!
People there did a beautiful tribute to Thompson, this statue is so real and perfect!
** thanks for introducing him, I will search more about his work! It's very interesting!

this is a great statue...years ago i had a friend who did brass sculptures and i can appreciate the work that is put into them. it always seems to be the same for artists, they become more famous once they're dead.
I've just image googled him, some of his paintings are very attractive. The statue is wonderful.
How interesting! I love the statue! Terrific capture! Now, like the others, I'm going to see if I can find some of his paintings! Great post for the day! Enjoy your day!

That is a great sculpture. I am ignorant of much of the art world and had never heard of him. Thanks for enlightening me.
Tom Thomson drowned in a lake in Algonquin Park. His canoe was found abandoned and his body discovered later so there were no witneses to what actually happened.
Being an ignorant Yankee, I knew not of Tom Thompson (though the name had a vaguely familiar ring)...he was very talented and obviously a real asset to Canada. It's too bad his genius was not recognized properly when he was alive.
A rugged statue which was no doubt intended.
Nice post, EG!
Being painter myself and being from Europe, I could see after I saw his paintings (thanks for the link!), why he became more famous after death - his impressionism is quite advanced for his time and place
where he lived (since Europe is often more ahead of us in approaches to art, I think it took longer to appreciate his art).
What a neat statue -- a perfect tribute to this artist! I was sure he was sitting on a BENCH! Well, he made his own "bench," didn't he?
I love this bronze .. especially with his paints ... lovely!
Interesting post! Enjoyed learning about Tom Thompson. Very cool statue!
It's a shame, but it seems nobody truly appreciates any artist until s/he's dead. Also a shame that we didn't have long to wait in this case.
(PS: Did anybody else look at the thumbnail for this and see a guy with a laptop in the park?)
Thanks for sharing this post. Is he like the John Muir of Canada?
Looks like a great sculpture! I just wish we had more statutes around Eagan ....sigh
Those are great sculptures. They capture the artist so well.
A beautiful statue, it's sad that his career came to such an early and abrupt end.
Wow he created some really beautiful paintings of that area. It always seems so unfair when artists miss out on the finacial fruits of their labor (Van Gogh)but c'est la vie I guess!
That is really a personal statue...so lifelike. You provided very interesting facts about this man.
I'm sorry to say that I had not heard of Tom Thompson before this, but your post (and link) were very interesting.
I've seen a number of Tompson's paintings at the McMichael and at the AGO. He was a ture nature lover and he loved the north country in particular.
I like it.
