Austin Sawmill, Kinmount, Ontario
The logging industry has been important to the province of Ontario since the 1800s but many of the earliest sawmills have disappeared or have been transformed into eateries or places to shop. Kinmount, Ontario, still has the real thing, battered by the years but in the process of being rejuvenated.

The Austin Sawmill, originally built in the 1880s, was a water-powered mill that operated until 1972. For many years the mill was left to decay until various families, individuals and businesses decided to renovate the building.

As you can see, the place is a photographer;s dream. Well, my camera and I were happy here, anyway!

I would have loved this place too. It's always nice when you can't decide which photo to put up b/c you have so many good ones!

When we visited Old Sturbridge Village a couple of years ago we saw them operate the old sawmill and grist mill and water powered carding mill. I find the ingenuity of the human mind amazing. We take technology for granted today but we have built upon the creativity of those who came bfore.
A very interesting spot and most conducive to photography.
Oh boy! I also love old wooden buildings in disrepair and old, rusty machinery.
So, this isn't being used as a sawmill now, right? It's being renovated though for other purposes?
