Fowl Play/Watery Wednesday

Last Friday was another day with temperatures below freezing on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Likely the swan will stay here for the summer but the hooded mergansers (male on the left, female on the right) are just passing through on their way to northern Ontario.

Canadian Castle/My World
Sleeping Beauty's place, somewhere north of Ajax, Ontario
Did you know Sleeping Beauty is Canadian? Well. I didn't either until I found her place on a broken road north of Ajax.
As soon as I saw the castle with the thicket of briars growing up all around I KNEW it was Sleeping Beauty's! I was flustered trying to figure out which turret she must have been in when she pricked her finger. If I had been thinking more clearly, I would have found a handsome prince to kiss her and wake her up.

The gate was locked, no trespassing signs were on it and a surveillance camera was in view. (That wicked fairy had thought of everything!) But a prince would know how to get in, wouldn't he?

The robins are back in East Gwillimbury staking out their territories, even though there's still some ice in the creeks. Ice has melted on fast-moving creeks (top three photos), but ponds are still frozen (middle photo on the right). There's very little ice now on or around Lake Ontario (bottom photo on the right).

Retired Fire Truck/ My World
Retired to a field north of Toronto
Sitting on a hedgerow between two fields and surrounded by dried weeds, this LaFrance 1948 fire engine was just too interesting to not take a photo.

Although American LaFrance Fire Engine Company (now called simply American LaFrance) is a U.S. company, there was also a Canadian plant in Toronto, Ontario until 1971.

This fire truck once belonged to the Borough of Etobicoke, now a dissolved municipality that forms the western part of the City of Toronto.

W/ Alphabe-Thursday
Wind Vanes (or weather vanes)
Which way is the wind blowing? Notice that one end of each arrow is larger than the other end so that arrow will point in the wind's direction when air blows over it.
Simple yet elegant vane
A simple vane consists of the four cardinal directions (N, W, S and E) and an arrow on a rotating axis. But most wind vanes are fancier.

The Livery/ My World
View of The Livery from the street
In the centre of Goderich - a small town on Lake Huron - The Livery was once a horse stable. It's now a theatre that features quality dramas, musicals, comedies, and historical presentations.

The Goderich Little Theatre purchased it and in 1983 the building opened as the Goderich's Arts Centre, which in addition to housing a theatre is also home to the annual Goderich Celtic Roots Festival.
Side view of back end of The Livery
The back section of The Livery - erected in 1849 - was originally a tack shop. Evidence of it's 19th century origins are still obvious here.
The front part of The Livery was built in 1878 of Maitland River Stone as an addition to the tack shop. But when cars took the place of horses at the turn of the century, The Livery became a car dealership... until it was slated for demolition.
Thank goodness for the foresight of the local architect who believed the building would make a great theatre!

White-winged scoter, Hamilton, Ontario
Sometimes I'm in the right place at the right time AND I have my camera. This was one of those times. I was trying to get some good photos of long-tailed ducks that were swimming from Lake Ontario into Hamilton Harbour when this male white-winged scoter swam close to me.
He was more hungry (I think) than worried about me, who was standing very still like a statue.
And he found something too! YUM!
