Small But Secure/ Our World

 Bars on the windows?

OH-OH!

Please, don't throw away the key!

Hey! Where are we?

Creemore jail built in 1892

This is Creemore, Ontario, a village that claims to have North America's smallest jail - 15 by 20 feet. (FYI: There are three other towns in Ontario that make the same  claim: Rodney, Coboconk and Tweed.)

 Sign outside the jail

I did go inside (my choice) and the accommodations are sparse - three small cells each with a bed,  a blanket and a chamber pot. A wood burning stove in a narrow hallway in front of the cells provides the only heat. Brrr.

So let this be a warning: BEHAVE YOURSELF!

Such a neat place to visit!

Sounds like a good enough reason to stay out of jail.

I suppose the stonework is so people can’t break through easily… but it is lovely to the modern eye. Imagine competing to have the smallest jail. In my area we have a community hall that is said to have been built around the smallest post office. Seems like tiny things are noteworthy and really cool. :)

back then a really small jail, now we have cells the size of this little beauty and millions of them. i love it, thanks for sharing.

Lots of old jails in my area have also been preserved. I guess we have a certain fascination with lockup history!

It's funny how the jails backed then had such "security". I bet my boys would be out of there within minutes;) Me on the other hand? I would hyperventilate:)

Love the red.

Funny! Thought you might have been downtown Toronto for a moment. I've seen some homes with barred windows. Must be sad to live there.

With 3 cells my best guess would be each cell is about 10x7. No thanks. I'll be good.

too cute! tight quarters, for sure!

At least it has a window to look out on the lovely landscape. It just looks too pretty to be a jail.

Love how you shot these, the details are what is so special about that building. Wonderful

I had to chuckle, this looks so much like a chapel...

A lovely little building!

Where are the shots of the inside? Surely you got some while you were in there....I mean visiting. :) At first glance I would never have guessed it to be a jail.

Pretty interesting, EG. If I can't be good at least I will try not to get caught.

Sometimes we need all that stuff!

I would never have guessed.

Oh, thanks for the reminder to behave myself!! I do need reminding -- frequently! I love this look at "your" world!! Not literally, of course! Terrific and fun captures for the day, EG!

Your photos tell a good story!

Sure.. after having seen this-- I'll behave! :@
:)

What an old prison - or jail, as you say.. A little spooky when I see the window.. But I liked the door.. on second hand.. I'm not sure anymore, if I would step right in.... :))

Great find, I like the details. Those cells must be really small.

Funny post!! Boom &n Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

It certainly looks great from the outside, but I was staggered to read it contained more than one cell!! Yikes - is that a sense of claustrophobia I feel coming on ??! Thanks for sharing EG

I would be sure I minded my ways up in them thar parts as I sure as heck wouldn't want to end up in that little jail!

I thought, what with the bars on the windows, it was a house in south Miami! :-)

It is a cutie!
(Port Dalhousie in St Catharines also claims to have the smallest jail)

These are wonderful photographs, and how fortunate you were to be able to get them! LOVE the first one.

Those are very lovely photos, and concrete representation of the story. I thought that jail is just a stone house without the label. I also posted a small stone house maybe the same size as that, but it was really meant as a house, not a jail. LOL.

This has to be my favorite post of the day. I would NOT like to be put here for being naughty. I think I would freeze to death. I am assuming it is still in use. The building is a lovely bit of vintage architecture. genie

It would be nice if prisons were this big and crime was low.

That looks like it belongs in the fictional village of Three Pines. I blogged about it today and linked you. Coincidence?

It's a minor miracle I've never seen the inside of a jail. Knock on wood. LOL! Wish all jails were this small. But all our windows here do have bars... hmmm... Nice shots, EG.

That jail door I posted a while back was on a pretty small jail, certainly no bigger than this, but yours is much more attractive.

O what a fun place to find as long as you are just visiting! Amazing stonework on this little building!

Your photos are so beautiful that this jail is almost cosy.

I was once in Creemore. I liked it very much, lots of small town charm and good beer from the local brewery :-).

That would be a deterrent to crime, especially in winter. But I bet it can get pretty hot inside in summer with so little window space. - Margy

It sure is a beautiful little building...even if it is a jail.
