Red-bellied woodpecker (Melaneries carolinus) on a fence post
Although red-bellied woodpeckers are common in the eastern U.S, I live just north of its range and so was very pleased to find a friendly one on the north shore of Lake Ontario.
Red-bellied woodpecker on a tree
This guy was wedging seeds and nuts underneath tree bark. I'm guessing it was saving treats to eat during the winter. Red-bellied woodpeckers also hide food in fences, which is exactly what it may have been doing in the first photo.

Stunning, and woodpeckers are one of my favourite bires!
Truly a handsome fella!
What a beauty! I used to have all kinds of woodies in my backyard in Mississippi, but I have yet to see one in Toronto.
he is beautiful, so is the post, I like it as much as the woodpecker... great shot
We occasionally see these birds here in SD, so it isn't just the Eastern U.S. where they live. Great photos of your feathered friend.
Great shots they can sometimes be skittish!! Last fall we had a red-bellied take sunflower seeds from our feeder, one at a time. He spent the entire day fetching seeds and hiding them. This went on from sun up to sun down, day after day!!!
Great captures!! I doubt his friends will make it this far north, but I can still admire wonderful shots!
Beautiful! These guys have been visiting the feeders here, I just haven't had time to get shots of them.
One są śliczne, a zdjęcia wspaniałe. Pozdrawiam.
They are beautiful, and wonderful pictures. Yours.
These shots are fantastic! You have better bird pictures than my bird identification book.
Great find!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
I see these birds at our bird feeders but have never been able to take such a close shot – these are very good photos.
i love these guys. we keep them year-round here. :)
Beautiful bird, appreciate all the bird shots you capture with the camera.
Your photos of this woodpecker are extraordinary! And such a perfect light! The bird is also soooo sweet! :)
Greetings Pia
This is a beautiful bird and an appearance from one is always a treat.
Great post! Awesome photos!
Very pretty. We have lots of different Woodpeckers here but I don't think we have that one. Nice shot. MB
lovely photos of a very pretty woodpecker. I'm always astonished how many woodpecker species are variations on a theme in their plumages...
It's a beautiful bird - I love that bright red spot of a head and the golden light here, so warming!
Beautiful shots of the elusive Red-bellied Woodpeckers.
Glad you were finally able to spot one visiting your area.
nice photos, we had one in the garden a few weeks ago, but haven't seen it since
Why do y'all call red-headed woodpeckers red-bellied woodpeckers? Seems very strange. Cute though. But they can make a mess of trees!
We had lots of red-headed woodpeckers in south Florida. Well, I thought that's what they were. Now I'm not so sure. Thanks a lot! :-)
A couple of lovely shots!
Really like the tones in that first one.
(I actually had a red-bellied ready to post but saw you already had so I switched.) :)
Great photos of the woodpecker. They are beautiful.
Once again, great portraits of the woodpecker, and lovely bokeh to boot!

Beautiful images of this colorful bird. I'm going to take a color-blindness test tomorrow. Its head looks red but its belly looks yellow. What do I know?
These are great portraits of the woodpecker.
Great pictures of a great bird - I miss woodpeckers!
Did you post a "banging your head against solid objects" to continue my politicians theme!!

It's always an unexpected treat finding one of these "rare" birds outside the zone. Good eye:)
