Great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) sitting atop a pine tree
Usually elusive, great gray owls hunt during the day, often perching among dense conifers, but here it is out in the open, easy to see. Their diet includes voles, squirrels and small birds.
Taking off
They are normally non-migratory, living in the north from Alaska to northern Quebec in Canada. In the U.S., they live in a few northern states from northern California to Minnesota.
