Long-tailed Duck/Wild Birds

Male and female long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis)

Long-tailed ducks are divers, known to dive down as far as 60 metres (200 feet) to find mollusks, crustaceans and small fish.

 Female long-tailed duck

This female was fun to watch dive as I never knew where she was going to appear next.

Male long-tailed duck

These two - as part of a large flock - are spending the winter here in central Ontario. They spend the spring and summer months in the Arctic.

I am joining Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday HERE

What amazing ducks these are to be able to dive so deep for food. I've never seen them here in NB but then I'm not near open water in winter and perhaps they prefer milder temperatures there. Great photos. The male is beautiful.

I like seeing different kinds of ducks. I only grew up with the boring white kind and the occasional mallard. :)

PS: Thanks for the info on the CIBC. I love learning new things!

I love the color of the ducks. All so pretty and all so different. It is like a guessing game to see where the duck will re-appear. MB

Beautiful ducks -- it's funny to think about the fact that these cold weather lovers migrate south to central Ontario .. I think about birds coming FROM there; I learn something new every day. Thank you.

You get more interesting ducks up there than we do in Connecticut. Mallards are all I notice.

Never heard of these beauties before! Maybe I could see them on the river if I carried my binoculars, as well as the camera and two leashes...

I have never seen a long-tailed duck! Incredible contrast of black and white with an extra flourish of the tail like a whip!

Very nice ducks! I used to watch them off the NE coast of England in the winter. Nice to see them again.

Thanks for the link to WBW.

PS: sorry for slow reply - I been out of internet range in Tasmania!
