Walking on Water/Our World

 Mallards walking on water...frozen water

It's January and we do have ice here in central Ontario now, but these photos were taken the day before Christmas when the ice was still thin.  These mallards seem to have been a bit confused, especially the male who kept slipping and sliding.

 Sign at end of pier

Had the mallards read this sign?

 Cautious female

I think she had because she moved slowly and carefully but...

Not-so-cautious male

this guy kept sliding and eventually put his left foot through some very thin ice before he limped to some open water to swim.

The ice looks as thin as a sheet of cellophane where the male mallard seems to be trying to skate. :)

The ice does look thin.

First thing I thought of is your shots define the old saying "you are on thin ice". I think my GGM said that to me when I was naughty.

Well, those poor little duckies need to get their tails down to Florida asap! We do get cooler weather on occasion, but this week it's gonna be in the 80s every day except today!

No different than how I would walk on ice! With lots of trepidation and feet in the air I'm sure.

at least if these gorgeous creatures fall through they can float..swim. i am wondering how they maintain ice..

Those cold feet!!
Great series!!

They will figure it out pretty soon, just like drivers slip and slide the first time they encounter winter ice.

We don't really have that problem here in sunny South Florida but then we don't get the chance to take many photos like this.

caution is the word in this case! They are adorable critters and clever as well!

I don't know how they can stand to swim in ice water but it doesn't seem to bother them. We always get a large flock of ducks that stay here most of the winter and then are gone all summer. These are nice shots of ducks on ice.

It is so funny to watch these guys try to walk on ice. They look like I feel when I have to walk on ice,so I guess I shouldn't be laughing.

Oh typical male, rushing in where fools fear to tread;) Beautiful and bright ducks, don't know why but the sight of ducks always make me happy.

They forgot their skates! :-) Happy New Year! (I'm late, I know but in France it's okay to wish it until the end of the month!)

But what fun they are having slipping and sliding on the ice!

The ice looks like fine glass! And it looks very slippery! Poor old mallard! I guess his pride kept him going!

terrific!! I caught mallards in the same predicament the other day as well...

Interesting to observe.
I hope they are having enough to eat.

Cute couple.

Guess these birds are not heavy enough to break the ice. Lovely shots of the birds, I love ducks!

Love your duck shots!

A few years ago I was visiting my brother in Rapid City, SD. He took me to a city park with a frozen pond, and we laughed as we watched the ducks fly in and land most ungracefully!

the ducks were probably wondering what happened to heir world.:p the ice looks so think i'm surprised it didn't break from their weight.

Trust the male to plough on regardless of the sign!

Ha ha! And what delightful shots.

Fun shots of the mallards stepping out on the ice. I love the owl shots in the next post too.

I would love to have seen these ducks, but thanks to your shots, I feel I have!

So cute. Our pond has frozen a few times and it is always comical to watch the ducks parade above water. MB

Probably wondering where the heck the water all went.

I love the texture of the ice, and the reflections of the ducks!!
