Northern flicker (Colaptes auratus)
I was walking along an abandoned road looking for birds when this northern flicker suddenly flew up from the ground into this tree.
Foraging for insects
Although it's a member of the woodpecker family, they spend a lot of time on the ground.

What a beautifully coloured bright eyed bird!
Nice find His colours and markings make for great camouflage.
He/she sure is beautiful.
I saw one in my yard last year, but the color was much darker, and didn't see the front of this bird either.

Absolutely stunning! and that "rear view" shows a little "heart" :)
Don't think you'd find this beauty down here. That first shot is superb! And it's a beautiful bird. Kudos to you!
Wow! Such a pretty looking bird, love its markings and the red on the back of his head.
Very pretty markings on the flicker. Love the little red heart on the back of his head. I don't think I've ever seen one of these.
That first shot is a real show-stopper! Great series! I love these birds. We get many of them around here. They have a distinctive flight; almost flying in a scallop pattern.
Great shots! Love the polka dot feathers!
Such a sweet beautiful bird, and I love the clarity of these shots! I would love to see something like this here (also beautiful crocuses in your garden from previous post - Spring!)
What a beautiful specimen.
This bird is adorable and you got lovely portraits!

Beautiful bird!
Ohhh, what a great find! That first shot is awesome !
What a fantastic shot of such a pretty bird! I've never seen one around here.
Or they spend a lot of time trying to get suet out of our suet feeders. We let them and they look so big as they almost wrap themselves around the feeder. They do love the apples in the fall though and then we don't like them as much. LOL MB
He is such a beauty! I'd love to see one some day. :)
I love your shot, we have northern flickers here in the spring. I love watching them "flit" from spot to spot.
Fantastic pictures of the Northern Flicker...
