Great Egret/Wild Bird

Great Egret (Ardea alba) and Canada goose

Egrets are such elegant looking birds, don't you think. The great egret was quietly fishing in shallow water, slowly bending  for a better look.  Then with surprising speed this bird bent down and...

 YUM!

caught a fish. A little more than a century ago egrets were nearly hunted to extinction - their feathers were used as hat plumes - but they are making a comeback.

Eating the fish

I did NOT know that info about the Egrets being hunted like that..... So glad that isn't the case now (at least I hope it isnt') Super shots!

You show us such lovely birds and do it so well. It always surprises me when I hear about how short sighted people were to hunt any wildlife to the brink of extinction. It would have been such a shame to lose this beautiful bird.

I love these beautiful birds and we have a lot of them in Florida. They are quick, too; I'll bet that wee fish had no idea what hit him/her!

Beautiful pictures of the egret.

That second shot is a stunner EG. Awful to think these graceful birds might have been no more..the things the human race does in the name of fashion is shameful.

That's great with the fish in the mouth! Glad to read the extinction threat is over. If only other problems could be overcome as well.
