Spotted Sandpiper/Wild Bird

Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius) on lily pads

During their breeding season - this photo was taken in late June - there's no doubt that this bird is a spotted sandpiper.  It was fun to watch it bob its tail up and down as it raced from lily pad to lily pad looking for munchies.

Last Saturday, another spotted sandpiper still had its spots, but...

Only ONE spot on this side

this one had lost most of his or hers. In winter their breasts are plain white,

Lovely to see the spotted sandpiper as we don't have them here, only the Common one.

I've spotted a lot of sandpipers but never one with spots! Nice shots of the spots.

I'm among willets and sanderlings here on North Carolina's Outer Banks and having a devil of a time photographing them. But with any luck . . . !

What lovely pictures of this sweet bird. The Sandpipers have a comical way about them that I love to watch. You have captured that in your pictures. Also, interesting information on the disappearing spots ... I love learning new things. Thank you ...

Very nice images. Sadly, we have lost our local breeders due to development. Now I must drive to see them.
