Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca)
On a stopover on its way south from the Arctic, this Greater Yellowlegs waded back and forth through the shallow water of a small pond. Graceful? Not very. The Yellowlegs ran jerkily a few steps, then stopped, ran a few more steps, stopped and turned around. Repeat. It was hunting small aquatic invertebrates but would also have been delighted to find a small fish or frog.
Another view
Yellowlegs - both the Lesser and the Greater - are fairly common here during their migration north and south. A few Greater Yellowlegs may linger here well into autumn as long as they can still find food.

Lovely. I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild.
Super images
The photos make the bird look quite graceful...do photos lie then :>) ??
It reminds me of a gawky teen trying desperately to be cool.
Great description of the ungraceful prancing back and forth. A beautiful bird when still tho.

Beautiful pictures of these birds.
Very well photographed, compliments.

Love the lighting in these. I always thought "greater" was so misleading - they're such a dainty bird and your images show its beautiful markings so well.
Beautiful shots with nice reflections.
Such a tightly speckled pattern on this fascinating bird.
Nice shots!
We're starting to see small flocks of Yellowlegs in migration here in Florida.
I bet they're a lot of fun to watch!
Wonderful photos! I like the reflection.
I like the lines of the bird, not graceful but simple.
You did a wonderful job capturing these delightful images. Very nice!
Sorry for my tardiness. Monday my bad knee gave way to a full Medial Meniscus tear and I am having Arthroscope done to help ease pain this Tuesday...doing life ;)
