Bulk freighter Three Rivers
On a windy but sunny Saturday in mid November, my husband and I were out looking for water birds. In the harbour at Oshawa we found no birds but did find this huge bulk carrier, sometimes known as a bulk freighter or bulker.

Mountain of salt
salt. Yep, this is the stuff used to melt ice on our winter roads. I'm sure I have never before seen such a mountain of salt.

Wow! I am amazed at the sheer size of both the freighter and the mountain of salt!!!
I betcha there's a lot of that being spread around the U.S. today. :-)
With the lack of birds you still managed to get to get some excellent photos. There's plans to build a ethanal plant somewhere on the harbour. That's got a lot of people ticked off.

Your photos remind me of the harbor in Duluth, MN that we often visit. It's cold in the winter, but delightful in the summer and tourist flock to watch the boats navigate the area. Fun to watch all the foreign carriers.
I have never, ever seen a mountain of salt. Too cool!!!
this is to cool for words. we have no need for salt here, so this is something i would never see. we do have the freighters, but ours are rusty, really rusty. this one looks new, the ship i mean...

That freighter is huge! Interesting cargo also.
These came into Portsmouth harbor when I lived in NH...and we used that salt for our roads also.

Isn't that interesting! Can you imagine working and living on that ship! And wow that is a lot of salt. We saw a mountain of sugar once down near the Salton Sea in California (and people were going to eat that!).

It's always interesting to watch the freighters. They play an important role in moving things around. Hope you won't need all that salt this winter though! :)
