White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)
I love these agile little birds! This one was making fast trips to and from the feeder, which made me suspect he was not eating all the seeds but perhaps hiding some of them.
Upside-down
I wasn't the only one watching. So was a sweet little hairy woodpecker. And guess what! As soon as the nuthatch hid his seeds and left, the woodpecker sneaked in and took the hidden seeds.
Looking away, perhaps suspecting something

Sigh! Just means that a nuthatch's work is never done.
I just love the cute Nuthatches..Adorable photos..Wishing you all the best in 2014 and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
What clever little animals. Beautiful, too, as you have photographed them.
I haven't seen any around here recently? They are cute little birds. Great shots.

Great captures. I especially like the top one.
Cute little birds!
What a beautiful photos!
Great pictures! I hear them a lot more than I see them.
Very cute bird.
These guys frequent my feeders too. Welcomed guests.
Wonderful captures! I just love watching these guys at the feeder, one hit the window the other day and was stunned for a bit. I worried the cat would end up getting it so I stood guard. I seem to be doing that a lot lately :)
really sweet bird!
I haven't seen either of these birds - yet. You got some great detail in these shots.
Woodpeckers are really sneaky! I think they are squirrels with feathers! Cute shots, though.
"Dripping icicles"? Boy, I haven't seen those in a long time. But as a kid we'd pull the long pointy ones off and lick them. Probably not a smart thing to do...
They are so close, and of course, beautiful.
An interesting observation. I'll watch ours more closely and see if they are doing likewise and getting robbed in the process.
Cute little Nuthatch! I have one that visits my feeder but he is so quick that I can never get a photo.
Awww, that woodpecker was smart, the nuthatch not so. :( Great photos. They are such sweet birds. I haven't seen one here yet this winter.
Cute little guys! Great shots!
A cracking little nuthatch you have there, quite different from our European Nuthatch. You made some interesting observations about the woodpecker stealing the nuthatch's stash of food.
These are gorgeous!
they are clever and beautiful!! i get them at my feeders in new jersey!!
Nuthatches are such amazing acrobats!!! Love to see them jumping around various trees. Surprisingly they can be found in Tucson during the winter. Happy New Year!
Awww, he thought no one was looking. He's going to be disappointed when he returns to his hiding place. My dog does the same thing with her food and the other two dogs always find it before she can return.
A sneaky woodpecker! I've seen the jays watch where squirrels bury peanuts and go and help themselves.
Survival of the fittest!
Have a happy new year.
Judith

Terrific shots, EG!
I was watching a pair of them this morning at a feeder...
This is such a cute and interesting little bird.
Happy New Year to you!
That is just too funny that the woodpecker stole what he hid!
I love the nuthatches, too...love watching them go up and down the trunk of trees...well, mostly down I guess.
