Male hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus)
As you can see here, this cute guy likes peanuts. He also has a passion for suet and sunflower seeds.
Hammering a peanut shell to get the nut out
They usually forage along tree trunks and branches, but here someone has placed peanuts in the shell on a tree stump.
Wondering if he heard something click - a shutter perhaps?

Cheeky woodpeckers; they've always been amongst my favourite birds. Beautifully captured!
Undoubtedly emanating from someone intent upon stealing one of his precious peanuts. :-)
Great birds they are.
wow, i love that he is like that is my peanut. it looks huge compared to his shape. a treat for sure. ( :
Good close captures of the woodpecker!
Very nice photos of the woodpecker
What a handsome fella, and he looks quite happy with his peanuts!

You get spectacular bird pictures!
I didn't know that they like peanuts. I usually put suet out for them, but I will get some peanuts for them, too :)
Beautiful close up.
this is so nice, to see the birds so close. Kind person who left the peanut amidst the snow. {:-Deb
Great bird photos, I can see some sort of fluffy feathers, I suppose that is why his is called hairy.

Look at the treasures he's found! I've never seen woodpeckers up so close, what lovely patterns they have!
Was it you who put the peanuts there? Great-looking bird but I've found woodpeckers of any variety to be kinda pesky! Love that first photo!
so very cute.
What a cute little guy! Nice close-ups.
Beautiful shots!
I knew they liked suet, but not peanuts!
Oh what fabulous shots! Great detail, I can see the difference between a Hairy and a Downy with these photos! This guys beak is much longer.
I wonder if my Acorn Woodpeckers and Scrub Jays would like peanuts in the shell. I'll have to get some as a treat for them. Great shots.
He's a beauty. Great shots.
That peanut is bigger than his whole head! What a go-getter! Great shots!!!
I miss my hairy and downy friends that I left behind in the States. Thanks for reminding my why.
He sure gave you some lovely poses.
The last pisture is so nice.
Good composition.
Many Greetings

They and the Downeys sure love the Peanut suet feeders too. We like to watch them. MB
Awesome photos and a nice bird.
Great serie of photos!
How Super Handsome he is!!!
Thank you!
Perhaps it mistook the shutter for a peanut being cracked open by a competitor?! Whatever the case may be, I'm glad he let himself be photographed!
They are the most common woodpeckers that I see in the city and it always a thrill for me!
cute, cute and more cute. A face you just gotta love.
That peanut is quite the bill-full.
He's cute and really enjoying the treat. I have them here at the sunflower silo and the suet cakes almost every day - male and female. I just can't get a good photo of them through the window. :(
Love the woodies, great sighting and photos of the Hairy woodie!
We get lots of Downies here but not many Hairies, so this is fun to see.
It appears he was looking at you. Beautiful bird.
Great photos of this cheeky woodpecker.
Great characterful shots. We always feel very deprived here in the UK where we only have 3 types of woodpecker - and one of those is almost impossible to see.
He's a hungry, hungry boy from the looks of that first pic. Great captures.
Wonderful series! The Hairy is not common around here and it's always a treat to see one. Especially one with a beak full of peanut!
Very nice photographs!
These are wonderful photos of the Hairy Woodpecker. I especially like that first picture with the peanut in his beak.
I love the woodpeckers. He's a pretty boy!
Woody has a BIG appetite!
That peanut looks so big compared to the size of woody's mouth as well as woody himself. Great photos.
You got wonderful close ups, this little friend is so adorable!Cute red spot!

Smart bird
Beautiful close-ups!
He is fluffy, is that why he's called the Hairy Woodpecker?
great shots of your pecker. :)
That is a mouthful in that top photo. Great shots!
What great shots!
Great images of woodpecker cracking a nut !
Just awesome pictures! The woodpecker with the peanut ("amendoim" in Portuguese) is stunning!
Here where I live we have yellow and red woodpecker too.
Love them great shots!
