Pine cone still attached to its tree
P is for PINE.
I'm pretty sire this pine cone comes from a red pine tree as there's a large stand of red pines in the forest where I took this photo.
Pine cone bird feeder
Last month, kids in a local garden group made pine cone bird feeders. These are huge cones from the southern U.S. The kids mixed various seeds with suet and then packed the mixture into the crevices of pine cones. Then they tied sisal string onto the cones so they could hang the feeders from branches. I've heard the kids really LOVED this project!

This is a photo from LAST winter. So far this year we've had lots of snow but no freezing rain in my "neck of the woods."

I collected a bag of those huge pinecones last time I was in S Carolina. They are massive! I love the idea of using them as bird feeders. Unfortunately my big pinecones got thrown out a long time ago.
I did this project with the kidling one winter long ago, and made a huge mistake: we hung it on a branch outside my bedroom window. Talk about noisy! (But the birds loved it.)
Ah, the pine in all its splendor and uses and disguises.
That pine cone feeder looks like a gourmet meal for the feathered critters.

Beautiful! Here in Arkansas we actually don't want pines near our homes as they topple easily in tornadoes. But, I love them. They have such wonderful texture and I love the green all winter!
Hi EG CG -- I have been accused of overusing the word "awesome" but I think it is absolutely perfect for that first photo. How many pine cones have I seen? Hundreds? Thousands? I don't know, but you make that one in the photo look better than the others. Nice work! John

That is one beautiful pine cone! We've used the pine cone bird feeder in our VBS with the little kids. They love making those, although our pine cones are much smaller. It would be fun to get some of the huge ones!
i have done that pinecone project with peanut butter and my squirrels just loved it * sigh *

I didn't know that you can use pine cones as bird feeders. Is it a personal idea or something that is well known or even sold in shops ?
Wonderful set of pictures. I used to make my own pine cone bird feeders. The birds loved them. It seemed like they could be in more natural positions while feeding.
The last picture wins for sheer beauty! But the first pine cone is so different! It is really beautiful. I would love to make this project, and we have lots of pine cones here, but only normal size, kind of big and long.
I've made that type of feeder with my Grands - fun and messy. Just right for a kid (and me).
There is something magical about pine cones, no wonder the kids loved that project. We used to have a box of Sugarpine cones ... They're also huge ... We used them for Christmas decor for years after we gathered them.

What an excellent idea for a bird feeder EG, one that I may have to try.
I'm behind again..drats..I will catch up someday! The pine cone bird feeders are super--our cones are entirely too small for that, but what a great project for the kids! I don't like the ice on my pines- it makes the limbs bend almost to the ground and I fear they will snap. But oh so pretty! Have a great day!

Love your presentation...we have pines and I collect the pine cones. They usually end up as fireplace tinder♪
I love collecting pine cones to display in the house and around the garden. I've made the bird feeder cones with Brownies and with the grandkids ... great fun. Now a days you always have to check to see about peanut allergies before making with groups of kids.
