Peterborough Lift-lock seen from the south side - built in 1904
U is for UP, and the top of the lift-lock is certainly UP - 65 feet in the air. Boats that wish to travel westerly on the Trent-Severn Waterway must be raised that much to continue. See the large pan on the left side of the lift-lock? It's raised and at the top. A similar pan is on the right side mostly under water in this photo.
A hydraulic lift raises the pan with boats in it to the top.

Muito interessante, gostei das fotografias.
Um abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.
That's a mighty impressive structure!
Truly amazing mechanism and construction! Thanks for let us know the process. Great shots
Have always enjoyed watching the process and mechanisms of lockes in action EG, pretty amazing concept.
I would love to be there and watch this happen. Great photos.
isn't our species ingenious?
Thanks, EG. I needed a "lift" this morning. :-)
I like locks, and even more to see them functioning. This is great!
We are determined creatures, are we not.
So interesting and to think it has been working all these years.
i have only seen these in photos and movies... they always amaze me
I've never seen these in person so I really appreciate these great photos. Quite an operation for sure!
Those locks are amazing!
At a lake nearby we have a series of locks, but nothing like this. Design and size dwarfs ours.
Like many others I'm fascinated by the locks!! Great captures for the day as always! Hope your week is going well!!
very cool....and interesting structure!!!!
It is such an impressive structure.
Right here in my new neck of the woods.. though I've not gone to see it yet. Your fine photos have drawn me to do so... soonish. :)
Very impressive structure
I've watched it working many times and always find it fascinating, EG! Good shots!
I have seen these before. Fascinating to watch.
We are our Florida boat through locks pretty often, but this one looks scarier! Good pictures.
This is one of the best sights in Ontario, IMO. A real marvel of engineering. :)
Wow they are pretty sophisticated locks. Very different to the ones on the canals here
What an incredible piece of engineering!! xx
Nice photos. I have always been fascinated by lift-locks.
My parents took my daughter there many years ago! Great memory!
I love watching the barges go through the locks on the Mississippi River. Great captures!
Locks and windmills both excite me...not the hew variety but the older ones. They are magical to me...and bring out my inner child. The windmills move wind and the locks with their water help to move boats. That is exciting to think about. Your pictures of these locks is great. You really got a great capture. Is this an old lock that has been modernized.
oh a Lift Lock is interesting! We all know about the ones that fill or empty with water....

Very cool! This reminds me that there are locks in Seattle. I saw them many years ago, before I moved to the Pacific Northwest. Now I'm curious to see them again.
That is am interesting lock.
☆It is funny to travel in Lift Lock like this.☆
That's really interesting I've seen elevators for Cars but this is the first time I am hearing about one for boats too.
Great shots and creative post for U ~
Happy Week to you,
artmusedog and carol
That is impressive!
That's some amazingly thorough contraptions! What a problem solver!
Its already been said here. So i am basically reiterating that it is an impressive structure.
Such interesting structures.
This is pretty narrow. It can't take very big vessels or many vessels at a time, I suspect.
Locks are impressive feats. I go gaga when I get to watch them at work. Doesn't matter if they only raise or lower a few feet. To have that kind of mind to invent locks.
The View from the Top of the Ladder
I would love to see this in real life...
I really enjoyed your post! Talk about having an impressive invention! Wow! Great choice. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool!
