White-throated Sparrow

 White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)

White-throated Sparrows are forest sparrows with a lovely song that seems to sound like Oh-sweet-Canada.  How appropriate since during spring, summer and fall, they breed across Canada. During winter, though, they do fly south to eastern and southern North America.

As you can see in the photo, they like to feed on the ground, scratching for yummies. But they can also be seen in low shrubs, particularly in spring when they find new buds tasty.

Eating at a feeder

Keep seed in your bird feeder and they'll eat there too.

Great shots EG. One of my favourite sparrows, I just had a couple in the yard the other day, on their way south by now.

You have captured this little guy so well. from a distance you might miss those bright colors. We see them here as they pass through on their way south.

This is a fine-looking sparrow. I wonder if they get to Florida? The only sparrows I've seen are the brown/grey nondescript ones.

I like their song too and now I will always think of Canada when I hear them.

What a pretty bird. I don't think we have them out this way. At least that's what the book says. I love the white throat patch. MB

I think some of those sweet little birds come to my feeder in the winter! But I never knew they were singing a song about the country I was born in!

It's neat to see one close up and realize how much color they really have.

I have seen this sparrow here on occassion. I am assuming they are just passing through because they seem to be here one day and gone the next. They are very colorful as sparrows go so they are easy to spot when they are around. Very nice pictures EGCG ...
