Osprey nest on platform above electric wires
This week's Photo Hunter challenge: electric
Across central Ontario, ospreys often build nests atop tall pines close to shallow water alive with fish. But in many otherwise perfect nesting areas, tall pines have been cut down to create shorelines and to build cottages and houses.
So ospreys have learned to build nests on top of hydro poles (a.k.a. telephone poles). As you would expect, this exposes the birds to live wires, which can electrocute ospreys and cause power outages and fires.
To the rescue - Ontario’s main electric company – Hydro One! In popular osprey nesting areas, the company builds plywood nesting platforms above the wires.

This is so neat. The osprey do the same thing in Florida...in fact, along US 1 going from Miami to Key Largo, almost all the poles in a certain section have either osprey or eagle nests!

I think it's wonderful that the company built these nesting platforms. I doubt that it costs all that much and it definitely does help the osspreys. Thanks for a great picture.
